ONLINE & DISTANCE EDUCATION

What is online and distance education?
It’s where you enrol in a course through a University, TAFE, or college, but study at home instead of going to your campus each day.
Am I suited to online and distance education?
Do you walk to the beat of your own drum? Do you dislike institutional places? Would you prefer to study in the comfort of your own home? Can you do without the social chats at school? Do you want to do things how you want in your own good time to fit in with your lifestyle? If you answered yes to these questions, then you might want to consider open, online, or distance education. You need to be self-motivated and disciplined, and you’ll need a good internet connection.
What can I study online or at a distance?
Not all Universities, TAFES and colleges offer online, distance or open education courses, and not all courses are available this way, but there are still many to choose from, depending on what you want to do. Decide what you’re interested in, then search for tertiary institutes who offer this study method. Always check travel requirements and how much can be done off-campus. If you’re doing a course of study that has practical sections to it, then at some point, a trip is going to be unavoidable!
How does online and distance education work?
Quite simply, you study your text books, do your assignments and exams, and submit all your work via email, snail mail or internet websites to your educational institution. You’ll still have most of the usual resources you’ll need, and lots of course materials will be sent to you. There are still deadlines for your work, and sometimes you’ll need to attend things in person if it’s possible, but most of the time you can complete subjects in stages that are more flexible for you. You’ll get your qualifications at the end of your course just like everyone else.
How will online and distance education help my career?
It will help in just the same way as all other modes of study in gaining qualifications, but it may also help in other ways, if you want to begin a career or go places where you can’t attend school like usual. You get to advance in your career and study at the same time.
What will an online or distance course cost me?
Just the same as it would if you were getting your body to campus each day! The only difference is that if your study options are more flexible, then sometimes how or when you pay is more flexible, but that’s a long shot!
