Like with any job search, sometimes the best thing to do is get out there and actually talk to business owners to see if they’re hiring. This can mean approaching employers in your area or it can mean leaning on your network of friends and family members and seeing if they know anybody that would be a suitable employer. You can also look through job sites and in your local paper to see if there are any apprenticeship or traineeship vacancies near you.
Group Training Organisations (GTOs) are really useful because they’re all about linking you with host employers for you to learn the skills of the trade from. The GTO is technically your employer throughout your apprenticeship or traineeship, but will assign you to different businesses throughout the duration of your training to make sure you are receiving quality guidance and learning all the skills required to succeed in your trade. It also means that if one business runs out of work or money to continue training you, the GTO will simply assign you to another business, cutting out the hard work for you.
Another way to get started an apprenticeship or traineeship is to start a VET course in your desired field, such as a Cert II in Construction. From there you’ll learn the basics of your trade or occupation of interest, as well as being in touch with a range of industry experts who will be able to point you in the right direction in terms of getting yourself an apprenticeship or traineeship.
