In your thirteen years of school, you’ll go through teachers like the seasons.
You’ll come across teachers that trudge through confusing content, leaving you behind if you don’t understand. You’ll also find that some teachers don’t reply to emails at all. These are the teachers that treat it like a shitty 9am to 5pm job.
But amongst the haystack, you’ll come across an absolute cracker of a teacher.
This is the teacher that gives you solid feedback, paces through the content and makes sure no kid is left behind. They’re a teacher that actually gives a shit about you and your future. They see you as more than just a number.
This is a shout out to that kickass teacher that went above and beyond. We appreciate ya.
Thanks for listening. You understood not everyone has it figured out and probably won’t (and that’s more than okay). You knew not everyone in the class wanted to go uni and you catered your teaching towards each of us personally.
Thanks for not treating us like little kids. You knew that most of us were struggling with all the stupid drama and shit that comes with being in high school. You knew that we were growing up, but we weren’t yet adults.
Thanks for trying to make each class fun and different. If I’m being honest, it wasn’t fun all the time. There were days where I was so tired and all I wanted to do was just nap through whatever you were teaching. Despite this, you still tried and that’s what mattered the most to me.
Thanks for being honest. You knew when I wasn’t trying my hardest and encouraged me to work harder. But you never pressured me either.
Thanks for not calling on us to answer questions in front of everyone. More importantly, thanks for not embarrassing me (or any of us for that matter) when I asked stupid questions.
Thanks for replying to annoying, late night emails stressing about the exam. It’s almost like you were on stand-by 24/7.
Thanks for creating study care packages. Those Cherry Ripes were divine with a cuppa on a late night sesh.
Thanks for having a laugh. When you weren’t demanding practice essays or homework, you were always so gleeful and were able to have a laugh with us in class.
Most importantly, thanks for changing my life. You taught me that school is way more than assessments, marks and rankings. You assured me that not everyone has it figured out and that it was okay. You said that although high school is ending, your life is truly just beginning. You made me feel like I wasn’t just a number.
So I apologise for skipping class on my real off days, disrupting everyone and rocking up with a coffee in my hand that was definitely the reason why I was late.
I might forget exactly what you taught me in years to come but I won’t ever forget you or the way you reminded us that we were more than just a number.
So, to the teachers out there changing our lives each day–this one’s for you.
