Many of us know we want to go to university, but we’re concerned the lecture-lifestyle isn’t for us. We don’t want to be planting our behinds in a seat every single day, typing notes from PowerPoint slides and struggling to keep up with the weekly readings. It’s too sedentary for those of us who are seeking a little more adventure and excitement in our lives.

You might not have heard of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) before, but for years they’ve been teaming up with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to offer a tertiary experience with a difference. ADFA combines an undergraduate degree from one of Australia’s top universities with military and leadership training to prepare students for a junior officer role in the Australian Defence Force. Not to mention you get paid a salary when you attend ADFA. But we’ll get to that, let’s break it down a little more first.

What can I study?

You don’t have to sacrifice the university degree you really want to study if you’re keen on attending ADFA. The UNSW offers a range of degrees, so you can study something you’re really interested in. Degrees include:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Business
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Aeronautical, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical)
  • Bachelor of Computing and Cyber Security
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Technology (Aeronautical Engineering or Aviation)

What else will I be doing?

ADFA develops the future leaders of the Navy, Army and Air Force through practical experience. Throughout your academic studies, you will undertake military and leadership training. This kind of training is a great way to stay active during your degree and will ensure you are getting out of a lecture seat to develop your fitness, gain new skills and realise your potential.

Where will I be studying?

ADFA is located in Canberra. This means you’ll be living on-campus in the cadet accommodation, so you’ll get a taste of the college life. It’s a great place to get to know your fellow Officer Cadets and Midshipmen, and make lifelong friends.

Did you say something about money?

Because you’ll be completing military and leadership training, you’ll be paid just like any other trainee AND you will have your tuition fees covered. It’s a full-time salary of $40K+, plus superannuation, free medical and dental, and your food and accommodation will be subsidised.

What happens when I graduate?

When you graduate, you will continue building your experience in your officer role in the Navy, Army or Air Force. While other university graduates may struggle to find a graduate position in the area they studied, as an ADFA graduate you will have a secure continuing position and enjoy a wide range of job opportunities as you gain more experience.
