The transition from high school to uni can seem scary enough without considering moving out of home and living on-campus. But hear me out, because living on-campus can make the experience about a million times more fun. There’s so more to uni than just getting a degree, so you might find you’ll want to consider a university’s campus accommodation when putting in your preferences.

Here’s what you can look forward to living on-campus…

1. Freedom

Living on-campus means no more nagging from your mum, no more curfews and no more ‘family dinner tonight be home by 6pm’ texts. Yeah, you might have to work out how to cook something other than 2-minute noodles and wash your own clothes but the freedom that comes with getting out of your parent’s house will be worth it. It’ll be up to you if you want to head along to one of the many campus events, hang out with your uni friends or spend a night procrastinating and watching Netflix.

2. Friends

A perk of living on-campus is you’re going to meet a heap of people really quickly, and you won’t lose them after one lecture. You’ll be amongst all the campus action so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet your new bestie. Plus, there’s always going to be someone around if you want a late night study sesh and the people you meet while living on-campus are probably going to be some of your best mates for life.

3. More sleep

Uni students are typically sleep deprived. Assignments, exams, work, commuting, study and whatever else you’ve got going on means it can be tough getting enough sleep. On-campus students have got this part figured out. Got a 9am class? No worries, just roll out of bed around 8:50, grab a coffee from the café located conveniently outside your building and settle yourself into your lecture hall. Laugh at the suckers that had to wake up hours ago and feel smug with the knowledge that you’ll be able to head back to bed for a nap in between classes.

4. And no commute

Say goodbye to packed morning trains or hours spent circling the uni carpark trying to find a space. Living on-campus means you won’t have to sprint to chase down the bus after the driver pretends not to see you and you won’t need to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic when your class finishes in the middle of peak hour.

5. Convenience

Another perk of living on-campus is that everything is right there. You’ve got your library for all-nighters spent studying for your exams, the uni bar for celebration drinks after handing in an assignment, plenty of shops and food outlets for a cheeky feed and the uni gym for when you need to burn off all the carbs you consumed over exam period. Universities can be like miniature cities, and living on-campus is basically like staying in the centre of everything.

Keen to know a little more about the on-campus life? The Australian National University (ANU) offers a tonne of on-campus living options. There are ten separate accommodation options for undergraduate students within a range of pricing so you can figure out what fits into your budget and will work for you. Plus, the campus facilities are ace, so it’s worth looking into if you’re considering campus living.
