Are you ace at wrangling the group chat and actually making sure plans with your mates get organised? Are you a bit of a dictator when it comes to arranging the tree decorations at Christmas? Do you attend parties and think how much better it would have been if you were the one throwing them? While you might be a massive pain in the ass to your family and friends, it actually sounds like you’ve got the eye for a job in event management.

Event management is one of those awesome and very rare careers where you can make it pretty much whatever you want it to be. You can tailor it to your interests and lifestyle, whether that’s getting low on the df or styling the most heavenly cheese platter out (um, yes).

1. Throw (and attend) some seriously impressive parties

Soiree, shindig, rave, gatho. Whatever you like to call it, a well-planned party is always a good time. And as an event manager, you could be planning and attending a different party every weekend, from small birthday gatherings to huge VIP events (where the bar is open and the food tables are overflowing).

You’re the one at the helm, so you can make any party as awesome as you want it to be. So you might as well think big.

2. Create the festival you’ve been dreamin’ about

If you’re a music fanatic and like having a reaaaal good time in the middle of a paddock every weekend in summer, then planning festivals is the job for you. Think of all the job perks.

Festivals and live performances have to be dreamed up and organised by someone, from the smallest details, like the designs of emails, to the biggest, like the layout of stages. It’s a great way to get creative, watch and meet bands you’ve always loved and create a tight-knit community of like-minded people. Even if it is just for one magical long-weekend.

3. Help create couple’s perfect day

The weddings industry is still growing massively, with more and more people having increasingly extravagant weddings every year. Even small weddings involve a pretty insane amount of planning, from finding a venue and celebrant, to organising the food, decorations, photography and seating.

Helping create the perfect day for a couple is a job that’s pretty unique. You’ll be challenging yourself creatively every day to ensure everything looks amazing and it all goes off without a hitch. That’s not to mention the amazing perks of planning a wedding – cake and wine tasting anyone?

4. Organise massive national sporting events

Whether it’s a nationally loved sport like AFL or cricket, or something a lil’ more obscure, like roller derby or Quidditch (yes it exists), organising sporting events is exciting for any sports fan. It’s a great way to stay involved with a sport you love, just in case you don’t quite make it as a professional player.

Think of all the games you’ll get to attend, all the players you’ll get to meet and all the places you’ll get to travel to. If The Australian Open or City2Surf isn’t big enough for you, you could always aim for something a little more international. The Olympics perhaps?

5. Whatever the hell you want

There’s events for just about everything these days. Festivals celebrating espresso martinis. Conventions dedicated to cosplay. Events come, go and change all the time. So if you can see a hole in the market and have an idea for a unique event, go fill it!

If event management is sounding like a literal dream job, then APM College of Business and Communication at Torrens University offers a great Bachelor of Business degree, specialising in Event Management.
