If we had it our way (and had lots of money), we’d travel non-stop.

Travelling broadens our horizons, rejuvenates the soul and shows us what a small place we occupy in this world.

Although, the cost of an insightful and unforgettable journey can be a wee bit steep and our poor empty pockets don’t let us forget about it. But don't stress, because there are plenty of destinations out there callin’ our name, the kind that don’t require the cost of your limbs.

So if you’re itchin’ to travel but are on a pretty tight budget, here are some cheap options that you'll be pretty chuffed about.

1. Sri Lanka

Lush landscape, delicious food, historic ruins, abundant wildlife and tropical beaches- Sri Lanka is an absolute jewel (get it? Because Sri Lanka is an island sort of shaped like a jewel? I’ll show myself out).

As beautiful as it is, Sri Lanka is also quite a cheap country to visit – even when you splurge. All up, you could get away with $50 a day, although the flights to and from will be pretty hefty and range from around $700 to $900 return.

But if you’re pretty keen on a unique adventure, doing a little hiking, checking out ancient ruins and kickin’ back on a beach, take a chance on Sri Lanka.

2. Byron Bay

Yep, you guessed it. The boho capital of Australia. It’s a no brainer.

Byron is one of the most eclectic coastal spots in Australia, making it a popular tourist destination. For good reason though; Byron offers pearly beaches, a chill yet wild nightlife and a hinterland that's asking to be explored. And it’s relatively cheap too- you’re looking at roughly $70 a day in old Byron town. To save costs even more, you can road trip to the destination and camp out with your mates to skimp out on exxy accommodation- even better stay at the number of hostels Byron have to offer.

Your pockets will thank you.

3. Cambodia

With a history that is glorious (and horrifying in equal measure), Cambodia is one of Asia’s undiscovered treasures. Cambodia’s mix of cities, ancient temples, lush beaches, captivating culture and wild nightlife means the country seduces any young traveller.

And the best part is that it won’t break the bank either- flights are cheap as chips with prices low as $400 return, hostels are $5 a night and food and drink can cost next to nothing.

4. Tasmania

Australia’s distant relative. Joking.

Tassie is a hidden gem tucked under Victoria and is home to some of the most awe-inspiring scenery. Crystal blue water, the gorgeous Cradle Mountain and one of Australia’s best winery, The Tamar Valley. Tassie has it all and instead of saying it’s somewhere you’re ‘meaning to go,’ actually go and get amongst it.

The only exxy thing about Tassie is the flights- and even then, they're not to bad relative to other destinations within Australia.

5. Vietnam

Colourful sights, exotic smells, bargain shopping, loads of activities and bustling nightlife. Vietnam is a stunning country with a mixture of hectic cities and scenic country towns to explore.

Best of all, there are bargain flights under $500 return, cheap hostel accommodation and food that is so affordable (and delicious), all of which means that you can do Vietnam on a shoe-string budget but live like a royal.

6. Yamba

Situated on the northern New South Wales coast, Yamba certainly does live up to its reputation as ‘The New Byron’.

Yamba has cliff-jumping, gnarly surf breaks and an almost untouched beach town. Like Byron, you can road trip there with mates and split on accommodation. Then you can swim every day and  sling a few beers in the arvo as the sun sets... heaven.

7. New Caledonia

An understated and underappreciated cultural mixing pot, brimming with stunning views, rich food and picture-esque beaches.

New Caledonia is a perfect tropical getaway and if you wanna make an event out of, go on a cruise for as low as $800. But that’s if you enjoy getting day drunk with old people. And karaoke. And the off-handed Salsa dancing classes.

So instead of being quick to book an expensive plane ticket to Europe, suss out all your options. Especially the ones right here in our backyard.
