You know the drill; we’re living in 2023, an era where environmental concerns are becoming increasingly urgent. Now, it is more important than ever to start taking responsibility and learning to make conscious sustainable choices in our daily lives.
Being sustainable on a day-to-day doesn’t require drastic changes, I promise. Small consistent efforts can make a huge difference overtime, so don’t ever doubt the impact you can have.
So, here are five ways to be more sustainable in your day-to-day life:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Don’t doubt it! This lil’ mantra holds a huge value.
First things first, reducing consumption. Be more mindful of your purchases (I’m sure you have two tops that look exactly like that one at home darl) and opt for products with minimal packaging. I think all of Gen Z agrees that we could defiantly be better when it comes to consumerism. Oh and, this includes op-shopping too guys, just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean you need it.
Reusing is as easy as bringing your own reusable bags when shopping or always carrying your water bottle. This can also look like repairing and reusing items like giving your old clothes a new time to shine with a little bit of upcycling or making your furniture a new life with a bit of paint and DIY skills. Youtube, Tiktok and Pinterest are your reusable inspiration saviours.
Recycling is a must, but it’s often misunderstood. Make sure you familiarise yourself with your local recycling guidelines to be sure you’re properly sorting and disposing your recyclables. Remember to clean and dry items before recycling them also, I know we can be lazy at times but it’s one extra minute of your time that makes a world of difference.
Conserve Energy and Water
Look, this one is a win-win. Not only does it help the planet, but it also saves you money. Try switching to energy-efficient light bulbs. Oh and turn off lights, appliances and your electronics when not using them, especially when you leave the house. Since flicking a switch is the easiest thing on earth, it’s kinda lazy not to, tbh.
When it comes to water conservation, fix any leaky taps ASAP. I know it can be a pain, but it must be done. Also avoid excessive use of water for things like brushing your teeth or washing your dishes. Small changes where you can = doing your best for the environment.
Opt for Sustainable Transportation
Transporation is one of the most significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce your carbon footprint, consider your alternatives. Use public transport, carpool, ride a bike and walk where possible (hot girl walks are even hotter when you’re saving the world).
When you do drive, be fuel savvy (also for the sake of your own bank account because fuel is way to exxy these days). Combine errands to reduce the number of trips you need to take and get yourself familiar with shortcuts to avoid being stuck in traffic.
Choose Sustainable Food Options
The food we consume actually has a big impact on the environment. Make small changes by eating more plant-based meals where you can or meals that require fewer resources to produce. Of course, we aren’t saying you need to have a fully plant-based diet, but it’s no secret that plant-based foods are more ecologically sustainable as they require fewer natural resources, generate lower greenhouse gas emissions and have a smaller environmental footprint compared to animal-based foods.
If you can afford it, support local farmers and purchase organic seasonal produce where available.
A big one for people who have just moved out of home – work on reducing food waste!! You can do this by planning meals, storing food properly and composting organic waste. Even suss growing your own herbs and vegetables at home – having a green thumb is a fun hobbie too!
Practice Conscious Consumerism
Let’s be self-aware together!! Before buying, ask yourself if you actually need that item, and try to learn the difference between needs and wants (I’m still working on this).
Try to support companies and brands that make sustainability and ethical practices a priority (let us know if you want us to link you - Our Insta). Keep in mind quality over quantity. When making purchases having the quality in mind is super important. Fast fashion and cheap items aren’t made to last - they may actually end up costing you more money in the long run. Buying three flimsy jackets for $60 each is more exxy than buying one good qual one for $140. Minimalism is the key. Oh and get aquainted with thrifting, Facebook Marketplace and Depop!
If something seems suss, it probs is. Research the origins and production methods of the products you buy and look for certifications such as fair trade, organic, and rainforest alliance to make sure you’re making responsible choices.L ooking for a website that can do that for you? We’ve got you covered
Listen closely – sustainability is not a trend! It’s a way of life that benefits both the planet and all future generations. Also, it makes you feel good!
By implementing these five small strategies, you can actually make a huge difference in your day-to-day life.
