ICYMI: Australian Sport Wins Over The Weekend
Over the weekend, you've either spent endless hours watching a lot of sport from your lounge room or seen a fair bit about it on your socials. From someone who struggles to get amongst it, I'd have to say... watching it all back, the scenes were absolutely beyond.
There were some massive achievements from our Aussie homegrown stars from all across the board. If you're an adversary of sports like I am, I promise that these wins will still blow ya socks off (it's cold, ya probably wearing socks, get it, haha).
Ash Barty takes grand slam victory
Let's start off with the mammoth Wimbledon win for our gal, Ash Barty. If you're not a fan of tennis, you are now.
For all you sporting simpletons (again, me) - Ash Barty won the Wimbledon ladies' single title against Karolína Plíšková. Why is this important?
- She is the first Australian woman in 41 years to bring home the title
- The Ngarigo woman honoured Evonne Goolagong Cawley's (paved the way for Indigenous woman in sport) 50th anniversary win by recreating her dress
- Not only made Aussie's proud but was a massive win for First Nations people during NAIDOC Week
She's a former pro cricketer, ranked number one in the world in tennis and she's only 25 (?!?!). What am I doing with my life? She's also on her way to smashing it at the Tokyo Olympics this year so... There's nothing more to say than you're absolutely killin' it, Ash. We're so proud of you!
Dylan Alcott wins second Wimbledon singles title
Let's keep the tennis theme going here. Wheelchair tennis player and allround legend of a bloke, Dylan Alcott won his second Wimbledon quad wheelchair singles championship with a straight-sets defeat to his Dutch opponent, Sam Schroder.
He collected his 14th major trophy (out of 16 quad singles - 14/16 is a freaking craaazy amazing win to loss ratio) and won against the same opponent in the Australian and French open earlier this year - gotta say, he's set the precedent to completing a 🏆golden slam🏆 this year (winning four majors in a calendar year).
Aside from his huge accomplishments in tennis, he was in the Australian wheelchair basketball team, has his own podcast called ListenABLE and hosts a live music show, The Set on the ABC. What's with these sportspeople smashing it in multiple sports when I can barely uphold the courage to go for a run? Anyway, we're so keen to see what's next from him. Love ya work, Dylan!
Patty Mills buzzer beater leads the Australian Boomers to victory in Olympics warm-up game
Aside from the exciting news that Patty Mills is the country's first Indigenous Olympic flag-bearer in Tokyo this year (YEEEESSSSS!!!), the professional basketballer reppin' Australia ain't stopping with a buzzer-beating triple to win 87-84 against Argentina in an Olympics warm-up game. So, what does that mean? Don't worry, I had to Google it as well. He hit a 3-pointer to steal the win (outside of the lil' semi-circle bit). How freaking good!?
The Naghiralgal and Dauareb-Meriam man from the Torres Strait and Kokatha man from the far west coast of South Australia is a NBA champion that plays for the San Antonio Spurs and is a three-time Olympian. If you didn't know him, you sure do now!
Tai 'BamBam' Tuivasa celebrates UFC victory and... does a shoey
Out of every sport, I'd have to say that UFC tickles my fancy the least (especially when someone breaks their foot) but I will make an exception when it's a boy from my hood (Western Sydney represent).
Over the weekend, Tai 'BamBam' Tuivasa won against Greg Hardy due to a knockout in round one. The Wiradjuri and Somoan man walked out with the Aboriginal flag around his shoulders then yelled, "Western Sydney, baby!". But mate, if that's not enough representation for ya, he also skolled a shoey to celebrate. He does this fairly often; his other nickname is literally "Shoeyvasa".
In his professional career, he has now won 11 out of 12 professional wins by KO'ing these poor blokes in the first round. But we love to see it.
From predominantly playing rugby league in his youth, to getting signed with the Sydney Roosters, to debuting his MMA career in 2012 and to see where he is today - he's only on the upward. We're keen to see more wins (and shoeys) 🤙
