Overview
  • Weird noise coming from your car?
  • Don't just turn the music up, here's what it means.

We’ve all been there, you’re driving to your nana's house in your second-hand junkbox that’s hanging on for dear life, when you hear a weird sound. At first, you wonder if it’s an avant-garde, out-of-time, percussive addition to the song you’re listening to, but once that song ends, it becomes pretty painstakingly clear that the sounds are coming from within the depths of your vehicle. After wondering for half a second if you should pull over and call for roadside assistance, you decide, “She’ll be right” and max the volume of the music to drown out the whine coming from beneath the hood.

Cranking the volume might seem like the obvious solution, but if you want to keep your car on the road you should get it looked at ASAP. Especially if you notice any of these signs:

1. The Mysterious Check Engine Light

This little light can strike fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned drivers. While it could be something minor like a loose gas cap, it's always best to get it checked out by a mechanic. Ignoring it could lead to bigger problems down the road.

2. The Whiny Belt

A high-pitched squeal or whine, especially when starting the car or accelerating, often indicates a worn serpentine belt. This belt powers important parts of your car like the alternator and power steering pump. If it breaks, you could be stranded, so don't ignore it.

3. The Knocking Noise

A knocking sound coming from the engine could signal a serious issue, such as a rod knock or piston slap. If ignored, these can escalate pretty quickly and lead to costly repairs. So, if you hear a knocking noise, get your car checked out ASAP.

4. Smoke. Literally anywhere

Smoke pouring from your car is never a good sign. Keep an eye out in the rearview mirror for smoke coming out of the exhaust, or leaking out the sides of the bonnet Blue smoke often indicates burning oil, while white smoke can signal a coolant leak. Either way, if you see smoke, pull over straight away and check it out or call roadside assistance.

5. The Stank

If you catch a whiff of a burning smell, a sweet odour, or a rotten egg smell, high chance something's gone wrong. A burning smell could indicate an electrical problem or overheating brakes. A sweet odour might be a coolant leak, while a rotten egg smell could signal a catalytic converter problem.

Taking good care of your ride is the only way to make sure it has a long life. So, don't ignore strange noises, smells, or warning lights. Instead, get your car checked out by a qualified mechanic and you’ll avoid exxy repairs or being stranded in whoop whoop. Want to learn more about keeping your car in great knick?
