Allow me to direct your gaze in the direction of construction careers 👀
There are so many perks to working in the construction industry. For starters, you get to spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s a stable career and most importantly, every time you drive around with your friends and family you can point out all the buildings you worked on (or maybe that’s just my cousin).
Either way, there are a bunch of lesser-known benefits of working in construction like fitness, travel, your coworkers, variety and even the potential for a cheeky early retirement.
Paid To Stay Fit
Picture this, you’ve just clocked off from an eight-hour work day but before you can go home to cook dinner and relax, you have to head straight to the gym to squeeze in a workout. On the other hand, you could always work a job that keeps you active throughout the day. Then when tools are down at 3pm you can drive straight home and enjoy your entire afternoon, evening and night. The choice is yours.
Travel Opportunities
If you work for a big construction company, there’s a decent chance you’ll have the opportunity to work in a range of different locations, potentially around the globe (if that’s what you’re keen to do). Plus, no matter where you are in the world, there’s going to be construction jobs, so you could go full nomad, travel the world and you’ll never have to look too hard for work.
Team Camaraderie
Few workplaces have a closer group of coworkers than a construction site does. Physical labour is the type of work that can be boosted by a great convo, so there’s plenty of time during the workday for you to get to know your colleagues. Back when my family’s house was being renovated, I helped out from time to time with the tradies. We covered so many topics before we even got the old, “so, where abouts do you live” convo that it took one guy two weeks to realise I lived in the house we were working on.
Variety of Workplaces
If you work in construction, you won’t be confined to a singular cubicle in a singular office the entire time you work for a company. In fact, you’ll likely work in a whole bunch of different places – potentially even different cities. You’ll have the opportunity to work indoors and outdoors and in some pretty stunning locations which you’ll be obligated to post to your insta story with the caption “today’s office”.
Career Progression
Fancy calling the shots? Keen on making some serious cash? Well, we’ve got some great news for you, because a successful tradie doesn't have to stay on the tools! You can work your way up, become your own boss or shift into a role a little higher up the construction ladder (the metaphorical one). That's great news if you work a physical trade because you’ll thrive while you’re young, then have the option to work in a less physically demanding role down the track!
So, if they’re the kind of workplace benefits you wouldn't mind dipping your toes into, you can find a truckload of information about construction careers and the pathways into them via our brand-new Tools for the Trades Academy thanks to CSQ Construction Pathways!
