The rumour mill may have spread the goss that a creative career won’t make you big bucks.

The rumour mill is a little out of touch with the modern day. I mean, who uses mills anymore? But look around, we’re all consuming media and art every single day! Someone animated your fave Disney flick. Someone created the graphics on that cool ad you saw. Someone managed the last festival you went to… A career in the creative industries isn’t as niche and nuanced as it once was! Creative careers are everywhere!

And here’s the real tea… You can make BANK! Here are a few of the top paying jobs in the creative world rn.

User Experience (UX) Designer/Director

This job would entail you working with a design team and creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. A UX designer/director is part of the entire process of acquiring and integrating a product, including aspects of branding, design, usability and function. And you know what’s unreal? The average salary is a whopping $103,038 per year.

So if you want to create holographic phones or hoverboards (please, please make this!), then suss out JMC’s Academy’s Bachelor Of Design (Visual Communication) to learn all the ins and outs of this gnarly career!

Creative Director

With an average salary of $112,500 (and most experienced workers making up to $143,000 per year), as a creative director, you’d get to dip your toes in all sorts of mediums, whether that be digital, print or film installations. You’d never be bored, that’s for sure. Basically, you determine the creative vision of a brand or project and give it a cohesive look and feel. This could be in the realms of fashion, advertising, music, film, video games…etc.

A Bachelor Of Entertainment (Business Management) at JMC would teach you through hands-on, immersive lessons, how to make it as a creative director!

Graphic Designer

As a graphic designer, you’d create visual concepts by hand or by using computer software and work with fonts, shapes, colours, images, print design, photography, animation and logos to name a few! Your primary goal is to inspire, inform or captivate consumers with a recognisable and prominent design! Sounds fun hey! On average a Graphic designer makes $75,000 per year, with experienced workers making up to $110,221 a year.

Imagine just hangin’ with Beyonce!!), and creating epic events! Sounds like a pretty fun job eh? And you’ll be making on average $80,000 per year and up to $136,000 once you’ve got a bunch of experience under your belt.

If you’d like a diverse career that involves the planning, organisation and running of entire professional, business or social projects, the perfect place to start is with a Bachelor of Entertainment (Business Management).

Director of Photography (DOP)

The average salary is $75,000 per year (But once you make the big leagues, you can be making triple that… and then eventually triple that number)

If you’ve seen 1917, La La Land or Euphoria, you were probably thinking, hot DAMN, those shots are 11/10 vibes. When it comes to defining a film’s overall look and feel, very few play a greater role than the DOP.

If you were a DOP, you’d know all things to do with storyboarding, cameras, lighting, framing and movement. And before you say but I don’t live in Hollywood? That’s no longer a problem with there being sooo many streaming services, there is sooo many more opportunities all around the world. For example, the streaming service Stan produces a tonne of Aussie content! How good!

A Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film & Television) at JMC Academy is a hands-on course that would give you creative, technical and managerial skills to become an Oscar winning DOP! A Diploma of Screen & Media (Film) at AFTT is also an immersive, one- year course that’d give you all the skills and knowledge to make it!

Animator/Multimedia Artist

As a multimedia artist/animator, you’d be creating two- and three-dimensional models, images that appear to move, and visual effects for television, movies, video games, and other forms of media. Quite frankly, it sounds like the dream job. Not only is it an epic career, but you’ll be making on average $66,200 per year, with experienced animators making beyond $100,000 a year.

Animation at JMC Academy has been developed in association with studio professionals from Pixar to Animal Logic! So you know you’re in good hands if you were to study a Bachelor Of Creative Arts (3D Animation) or a Diploma Of Creative Arts (Game Design).

Songwriter

Believe it or not, some of your favourite songs weren’t actually written by Taylor swift or Post Malone. Yep, there are people out there whose careers are creating the music & lyrics for some of your favourite tunes that will last a lifetime. Or perhaps you are the musician who performs their own songs – that’s a pretty sick gig – especially if your song is neato and gets picked up by a producer, record label or publisher. Whether you’re crafting your own musical pieces or collabing with others to bring someone’s story, inspiration or vibe to life, it’s a pretty dreamy career if you work hard and have the skills to make it happen.

Got a nak for songwriting? Don’t hesitate to suss out the Bachelor Of Music (Songwriting) at JMC.

Front Of House (FOH) Audio Operator

As a FOH engineer, you’d be controlling what the audience hears during a live performance. Your primary concern is to ensure superior sound quality within the venue. This means that you’d know how to blend together instruments and vocals to achieve a perfectly balanced sound – you’re basically part of the band tbh since the musicians onstage would be stuffed without you.

The Bachelor of Creative Technology (Audio Engineering & Sound Production) can teach you all the ins and outs to be a FOH Audio Operator in 2 years!
