Overview
  • Figuring out what to do with yourself after leaving high school is potentially the hardest part of leaving high school, particularly when you are running low on cash
  • Here are some things to keep in mind when you are looking for that first job out of high school!

Picture this - you have just graduated high school. You never had a job in high school because you felt you didn’t need it. You are now searching for a job because you realize you are too poor to be able to afford enjoying this time off school before starting university.

However, no one has ever told you just how difficult it is to get part time work after high school. The lack of experience, the fantastic or not so fantastic results on your latest report card are no reflection on your ability to pack grocery store shelves. So, what are you supposed to do?

1. Lack of experience

You hop on Seek to see your local grocery store is hiring just to be told you need AT LEAST 2-years of experience in sales. You send your resume in regardless of this just to receive an email back informing you that you are unsuccessful. You spend countless hours scrolling through Indeed and Seek applying for just about anything you can. Sometimes you hear back, sometimes you don’t.

What can you do? Don’t lose hope. If you keep going that job will come. You may have $100 in your bank account and think it’s the end of the world but soon enough your hard work will pay off.

2. Job hunting becomes a touchy subject

You go to family functions and get hammered with questions about what you are doing next year and why you don’t have a job yet. You can’t get five minutes into a conversation without the mention of a job coming up. Your whole family becomes invested in trying to get you a job, but you just feel like you want to crawl into a hole. It starts to feel like you’re in a never-ending cycle.

What can you do? Tell people how you feel. Whether it is affecting your mental health or you just don’t wanna hear their opinions, be honest with them and yourself.

3. Fear of losing friends

You don’t get to see your friends 5 days a week anymore, as hanging out with them usually involves spending money. You fear losing touch with them because your bank account hurts just to go out and have a coffee.

What can you do? Explain the situation to your friend. Suggest other things you can do together that doesn’t involve money, like going for a hot girl walk. Your friends only need your company to be happy.

While there can be a lot of stress about finding your first job, if you keep putting yourself out there that job will appear out of nowhere!
