This means people from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences can launch their career any time with the right skills. If you’re keen to future-proof your career, get upskilling in these areas:

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) & Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search engine marketing (SEM) is a digital marketing strategy focusing on paid advertising online. The main goal of SEM is improving and increasing the positioning of a website on Google. SEM uses a mixture of paid ads and search engine optimisation (SEO) as part of the overall marketing strategy.

Effective SEO means the website appears higher on the likes of Google - which means more paying customers! The demand for SEM and SEO specialists is growing all the time, so you’d be hard pressed to find a more relevant job in the digital world. Usually it’s best to start with a degree in marketing, communications, information technology or business and go from there.

Data Analysis

Data analysis is big business these days. It is the process of collecting, modelling and analysing data to gain insights that support smarter decision-making. Data analysis is invaluable for understanding which channels customers use to communicate with the business (like facebook for example), their demographics, interests, habits, purchasing behaviours, and more. If data analysis sounds like a bit of you, then a degree in a field with an emphasis on statistical and analytical skills, like maths or computer science would be the best place to start.

Business Strategy Planning

Strategic planning in business is the process of documenting and establishing a direction of a business. The strategic business plan offers a place to figure out and record a business’ mission, vision, values, long-term goals and action plans. A well-written strategic plan has a huge part to play in the growth and success of a business and tells you and your employees the best way to respond to opportunities and challenges.

Strategy and business development are absolutely critical to business success, and defo offer the big bucks if you’ve got experience. Grab yourself a degree in finance, economics, commerce or engineering - most employers ask for degree level qualification but it doesn't always matter what it’s in! From there you can apply for relevant experience in roles that offer experience in strategy.
