What’s it all about?

With  fashion design training and qualifications, you can work while studying at a TAFE, institute or a college. You can either find yourself work in a field of fashion you’d like to work in, and ask if the employer will consider granting you a traineeship, so that your study is funded, but with less money earned, or you can find employers who offer traineeships, or you can begin your study first and then get help with job placement and funding from an employer.
Depending on what area of fashion you’d like to work in, there are many different courses and study options, including certificates and diplomas.

Will it suit me?

A fashion design course or training will give all you fashion divas and style gurus your chance to shine! If you love designing and drawing and making things, sewing and cutting and pinning things together, or addicted to fashion magazines, clothes, shoes hats, jewellery, accessories, or just love being a clothes horse, then a fashion design traineeship will give you expression to your creativity and craft.

What will I learn?

There’s a wide variety of courses you can study when doing your fashion design traineeship. It isn’t just devoted to designing clothes. There’s the technology behind the fabrics and making of garments, pattern making, sewing, equipment and machine use, production lines, retailing and millinery.

How long will the course last?

Depending on what kind of fashion design courses you decide to do, and whether they are certificates or a diploma, your training can last anywhere from 2 to 4 years.

What will I earn?

As a fashion designer, head of department or large company purchaser, you may earn $50,000 – $75,000 a year salary, up to $100,000. As a production assistant, seamstress, tailor or pattern maker, you can make around $35,000 – $50,000 a year salary. If you branch out on your own and eventually make it big, then you could earn much more. The Sky’s the limit for all you trendy fashionistas!

What careers will there be for me?

Fashion design training and qualifications will get you anywhere you want to go in the industry, if you’re willing to work your way up through the ranks in this sometimes cut-throat business. You can work as a designer in a fashion house, work in production as a pattern maker or seamstress or other kind of assistant to designers. You can manage retail shops or be a purchasing officer for department stores. You can produce your own clothing line and develop your own business. Maybe you’ll design costumes for theatre productions and dance performances.

What is Fee-Help or HECS?

Did you know the FEE-HELP / HECS scheme allows you to study now and pay for a course later? The great thing about FEE-HELP / HECS is that you don’t have to make any re-payments until you have a job and your income reaches a certain level, which for the 2014 / 15 income year is $53,345.
