Meet A First Nations Comic Book Creator
Overview
- Finding your passion early on always seems straightforward, and then adulthood hits you in the face.
- It can feel like there are so many other ways to make a living that wouldn’t be anywhere near as difficult.
- Whether your dreams are years in the making or happening overnight, Scott Wilson proves that following your dreams is worth every setback and challenge.
Recently releasing the first comic book in his new series the INDIGIVERSE, Scott’s story began about a decade ago when he first started forming his idea for a comic franchise, just as big as Marvel or DC, that told the stories of Indigenous superheroes.
It was not always easy to follow his dream of publishing the first comic, Dark Heart. However, he never once doubted that he would create INDIGIVERSE, ‘it was just a matter of when’.
“There has not been anything like this, especially in comic books. This is the first of its kind and will continue to grow as a franchise,” Scott said.
While the idea has grown with Scott for years, it first came to him back in high school.
The passion to create the INDIGIVERSE universe came from “A need to invite the world into our stories to shift the perspective and share a worldview of the oldest living culture on this planet”.
To create a story that understands, respects, protects, and values First Nations languages and culture is key to the fervent passion Scott has put into the INDIGIVERSE.
“The animals and ancestral beings in this universe is and will be inspired y true stories from our Dreaming. The language used in the book is my language and through the comics I am to preserve, share and protect it.”
Without Scott’s culture “There would be no INDIGIVERSE.”
To create a space in the INDIGIVERSE, in which the readers speak and understand Scott’s language was the goal that fuelled Scott’s passion.
“The INDIGIVERSE is a fictional comic universe, but it is inspired by the stories I have been shared by my parents and elders If you are someone who thinks that following your dreams is unrealistic or unachievable, Scott has two questions for you to ask yourself.
“One, does the creative space bring you joy?”
“Two, does the creative thing you do bring joy to others?” Scott said.
If your answer is yes to either of these questions, Scott suggests to “Pursue it ruthlessly and strategically with all your heart. If it doesn’t then go find what brings you joy and that comes with finding out who you are. So travel, dip a toe in, take the calculated risk”.
Scott’s success in creating the INDIGIVERSE shows us that keeping your passions alive and finding your purpose is very possible.
“Creativity can change people’s lives. As a creative, you have the ability to shift the perspective, enhance perspectives on life and empower through visualisation.”
“Explore every aspect in life to find what gives you joy,” Scott says.
While still following his dreams Scott is also busy building another career as Year13’s own First Nations Programs Developer.
Scott’s story shows that finding and following your passion is a unique experience for everyone, and so can’t be defined as the right and wrong path. All that matters is chasing that thing, whatever it is, and ensuring that it comes to life.
