“The customer is always right”… I mean, that sentiment is questionable. But sometimes the customer is more than right; they’re a deadset legend. Upon the peak Christmas period, hospitality staff are pumping themselves up for the silly season and as they say, kindness is free, so sprinkle that stuff everywhere!

The guru

One minute you’re asking about the weather, the next, you’re diving into your love problems or family drama. What’s better than a free therapy session with a customer who shares golden nuggets of wisdom, amiright?!

I was once caught in the crossroads with a decision I had to make. I found myself venting with a customer and they simply said: “choose the bigger life”. I still think about this every day. Were they Ghandi? Potentially. But they open our minds to much more than what’s in our everyday lives!

The enigmatic love interest

Whether you serve them once, or they’re a regular, there’ll always be a customer that slows your heart beat. Maybe it’s their smile, their fashion sense, a silly joke they make or a flirty line… The tension as you pass over their coffee and they, in slow motion, grab it and reply “thanks”, is enough to keep you on cloud nine for the rest of the shift. 

My friend is dating someone she served working in hospitality. There’s hope for us all. 

The caring sharer

Maybe they threw a birthday party at your restaurant and gave you the rest of the cake. Maybe they tip you a crisp $50 note (or a pineapple, as some may say). 

One day, I was working at a cinema and it was freezing cold because the heaters had carked it. A customer saw me shivering and came back with a hot chocolate and a hot slice of banana bread for me. It made my day. Just like the staff, customers go above and beyond too!

The Karen… eek

There will always be amazing customers. But unfortunately, there will always be Karen’s… You can’t have a rainbow without a little rain right? And trust me, Karen’s bring a thunderstorm.

Nothing will ever be good enough for them and you can sleep easy knowing “Can I speak to the manager?” will be on their tombstone. ‘Nuff said.

The comedian

"There’s no price! Ha! It must be free" Such wit! Such humour! Yeah, you have to fake laugh a lot in hospo. But sometimes a customer will have stand-up comedy level humour and will leave you in stitches. 

Not to mention the beautiful things you overhear from customers. I have a note on my phone dedicated purely to this. 

The regular

There will always be the regulars. You remember their coffee order or their fave beer. You ask about the kids, the new house and the job. Familiar faces are pretty wholesome, especially when you really get to know a customer. Bless up.
