Well, isn't that the million-dollar question?

As sad as it sounds, making friends becomes kinda tricky when you leave high school. Where once it was as simple as being in the same Maths class or catching the train together, you now need stars and schedules to align to even consider starting a friendship.

But dw! It's possible. Here are some things you can do to potentially meet some funky people!

1. Get a hospo job

You know that scene in the first Harry Potter film where Harry and Ron save Hermione from a troll and the three become best buds from this overwhelming and crazy shared experience? That's exactly what happens in hospo.

Hospo is a wild, fast-paced environment and the shared struggles will bind you to your work comrades. The majority of my best mates are from previous hospitality jobs at cinemas, cafes, and pubs.

Even if you don't have time to lock into a hospo job, doing events work every now and then will not only earn you dosh but allow you to meet a tonne of new people! Join some event groups on Facebook or sign up to work at an upcoming festival!

2. Join a sport team

I am an abysmal footy player and sound like a dying walrus when I exercise. But you best believe I joined a team.

Maybe you'd prefer volleyball, netball or tennis. Whatever floats your dingy. The point is, you'll meet a tonne of people at training and at games. There will probably be a lot of events (like Ladies Day) and a lot of pub sessions with the team as well. Vibessss.

3. Do a class

If you wanna learn something new, why not sign up for a class? Whether it's an art class, a foreign language class, or a philosophy class, you'll have something to bang on the resumé, some more knowledge in your noggin', and a perf opportunity to meet people!

4. Join a gym

If you like to exercise (or probably should do more of it, that's a dig at myself), joining a gym will allow you to meet a tonne of people!

A lot of gyms also run regular classes, allowing you to brush shoulders with regular people. You'll also make some gym buddies that make the whole working out experience all the more fun.

5. Book club

Reading makes you hot. It's a simple fact that you can't fight me on.

Book clubs are quite intimate so you'll get to know everyone pretty quickly. Not only that but you'll be inspired to read more, consequently making you even hotter. What a result!

6. Volunteer

Volunteering in itself is an incredible thing you can do to one-up your good karma game. Not only that, you'll meet a tonne of funky people!

Some unreal causes include:

  • Human rights and advocacy
  • Children and youth
  • Animal welfare
  • Arts and culture
  • Education and literacy
  • Crisis support or disaster relief

7. Go to events

Whether it's a gig, a poetry reading, a stand-up comedy night or an art opening, diving into the deep end and really getting amongst your new city is the perf way to meet people.
