Becoming a soccer referee for a local club in Sydney has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. No cap.
Not only has it allowed me to stay connected to the sport I love, but it has also taught me valuable skills that have helped me both on and off the field. Here's how I became a referee, and why you should too!
How can you become a referee?
First, I signed up for a referee course through my local soccer association. The course covered the rules of the game, officiating techniques, and general tips for handling different game situations.
It was taught by experienced referees who were able to provide valuable insight and answer any q's I had.
After completing the course, I began officiating games for my local club. At first, it was nerve-wracking to make calls in front of players, coaches, and parents. Just remember, with each game, you'll gain more and more confidence and will be much more comfortable in the role. I also received feedback from experienced referees who helped me improve my skills and technique.
What being a referee taught me
I've learned important life skills such as communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Leveling up with these skills has helped me in my personal and professional life. I've become more confident and motivated as well.
As a referee, I'm able to ensure fair play and a positive experience for all players, coaches, and spectators in a sport that I froth! It's super rewarding to know that I'm contributing to the development of young players and the growth of the sport.
So, why should you become a referee? Not only will you stay connected to the sport you love, but you also develop life skills and give back to your community. It's a win-win situation!
