How To Consolidate Your Super And Claim Some Lost Cash
Did you know that there’s 13.8 billion dollars just hanging out there for people to claim? Okay, so you can’t claim all of it personally, but still, that’s a spicy fkn meatball. If you’re like us and don’t pay a whole lot of attention to where your super goes, especially if you’ve changed jobs or accidentally opened a new fund, then you’ve probably got some unclaimed super floating around somewhere.
So what’s the issue? If you’ve got two or more accounts open, you could be getting charged fees for both of them. You’re basically paying double what you should be, and over time, that stuff really adds up. Also, if you’ve taken out any kind of insurance, like life insurance, total and permanent disability, or income protection, you could also be doubled up, which is definitely a waste of your hard-earned cash.
The good news is that the government agrees, and they’ve set up a super-easy way to reclaim any of your lost super, or merge your accounts.
All you gotta do is jump on your myGov and click through to the Australian Tax Office Portal. From there, scroll down to the Super section. If you have multiple accounts linked to your name, it’ll say “You Have 2 (or more) Super Accounts”. If you click consolidate super, it will then take you through to a summary of all the super accounts you have. You should be able to see what funds you have with what companies, and which ones you have insurance with as well.
It’s a good idea at this point to find out from your employer where your super’s currently getting paid. If you close that account by consolidating your funds without telling your boss you might cause them a bit of a headache. But let’s say you’re happy with the one that the money’s going into, but you want to sort out the old ones. Click Transfer Super down at the bottom right of the page. You’ll then select the accounts you want to take the money from, hit next, and then select the account you want that money to go into.
You’ll then get asked to confirm that that’s what you want to happen, so if you’re all cool with that, hit submit, grab yourself a treat and congratulate yourself on doing some proper adult stuff!
If you’re working, chances are at some point you’re going to get super. But for some reason, they’re too busy teaching you how to calculate the area of a cylinder to actually give you the rundown on how to manage all this stuff. If you wanna learn the stuff you need to know that they don’t teach you in school, check out our Academy page.
