How To Land An Internship
Overview
- Need to clock those work experience hours but feeling nervous?
- Let’s look at how to put yourself out there and land your dream internship.
When you're trying to find an internship, putting yourself out there can be a nerve-racking experience – you might be stuck thinking, where do I start? What do I write in the email? What if they don’t reply? All of these are legit questions when trying to land an internship but fear not, we are here to give you the rundown on scoring the gig.
The first thing to do when you are after an internship is to make a list of the companies you want to work for and reach out! Most companies have their email address in the ‘Contact Us’ section on their website or they will have a spot on their page where you can write a message. Either way, sending a quick email introducing yourself and asking if they have any internship opportunities can go a long way. You might also want to include some reasons why you would like to work with that company and your credentials (show em’ what you can do!).
Remember that companies can be super busy and have a lot of emails to get through so if they don’t reply straight away, don’t stress – give them a few weeks. But, instead of bombarding the company with emails, take the chill approach. You don’t want to come across as too needy. Instead, reach out to other places that might interest you and try your luck. If you have your heart set on one place though, no harm in trying again in a few months’ time. What is meant to happen, will happen!
On the other hand, if they do end up replying and asking for a meet-up, great! Here’s your time to shine. Research the company, make sure your resume is up-to-date and prepare a nice ‘fit ready to make a great first impression.
Which brings us to the first-day scaries – we get it. Everything is new, overwhelming and on top of that, you want them to like you, that’s a lot. The key to acing your first day is confidence and pace. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take your time on tasks, they will get it – everyone has gotta start somewhere. Our hot tip would be to make notes too. Writing everything down in a way you will understand can be a hugeeeee help when you need to come back to things. At the end of the day though, have some fun, you got an internship and that is amazing!
At the end of the day, just shoot your shot. It is way better to try and for nothing to come from it than not try and miss out. Who knows where this could take you!?
