Job Hunting Not Working Out? Here's What You Can Do
So the job search isn't going so red hot. You haven't got any calls or emails back and it seems like no one else is hiring.
What an eye roll. Like c'mon, I'm just out here wanting to earn some dosh! But fear not my friend, because we're here to help you with your job hunt.
1. Don't rely on your computer
It's super convenient to just chuck someone an email with your resume attached but if you go the extra mile by handing a printed copy of your resume in real life, the dedication will seep through the pages.
Besides, a solid portion of managers are from the historic time where resumes were still handed in person. Chances are they may appreciate the effort a lot more. The cinema I work at only hires people who hand their resume in real life so it's definitely worth a crack.
2. Don't limit yourself
You may only be applying to places you regularly visit or just retail jobs. Don't put yourself in a box! Apply to random cafes that you haven't been in yet and branch out if you're willing. Apply everywhere and anywhere no matter how random or whacky.
When I was first looking for a job, I applied to every cafe and store I walked past and randomly handed one resume to a hairdressing salon without a second thought. Of course, I got a job as a receptionist at that hairdressing salon even though it was the last place I thought I'd be hired from.
3. Call up
So you've handed in resumes and sent emails to a tonne of places. Now what?
A perfect way to get yourself on someone's radar is to give them a call.
Ask to speak to the manager. Simply express your interest in having a job there, state that you handed in your resume and ask if there's anything you can do in the process. Perhaps they have an application that you have to fill out and will send that to you.
I've done this before and the manager straight up organised an interview and I got the job! If you put in the effort, chances are you'll be rewarded.
4. Ask around
You never know what you'll hear if you ask around.
Your mates' step-brother's aunty may have said a few days ago that Jim from your local fish and chip shop was hiring and voila, that could just be the perfect position for you! Perhaps they could put a good word in too. Ask your mates if their jobs are hiring. Suss out job search websites and look at neighbourhood noticeboards.
Don't be afraid to ask around!
5. Be nice to yourself
Stop the smack talk on yourself. Stop doubting your abilities and talents to get you a job and start being kind. Treat yourself the way you would treat your friends. Pump yourself up and motivate yourself.
You deserve a job, you can get a job and you will get a job! Believe it, baby.
