Overview

Here’s a taste of some exciting jobs in the construction industry you might not have known about:

While being a carpenter or an electrician can be a pretty sweet gig, there’s so many jobs out there in the construction industry that people don’t know about that could be a great fit for them. With such a huge demand for workers in the industry, opportunities for career progression and other great perks, why not make sure you’ve seen all the industry has to offer?

Drone Operator

You might think of drones as being for hobbyists and filmmakers, but drones are starting to make their way into the construction industry as well. Some drones are being rigged up with special technology to be able to survey large construction sites, creating a 3D interactive model that’s accurate to the nearest centimetre.

Some drones even have technology such as thermal cameras to check for friction rates on equipment, or can increase safety by looking at things at heights or conditions that would be risky for a person to do. Drone pilots in this industry often have an engineering background, and need to get a remote pilot’s license. Pretty cool gig, right?

Environmental Consultant

Environmental consultants don’t always get the same glory as an architect or site manager, but are one of the unsung heroes of any project. They have two main areas of responsibility.

Firstly, an environmental consultant will take a look at the site and see what impact construction work could have on things like land, water or air quality, including what local flora and fauna could be impacted. They’ll come in and see how those risks can be mitigated to make sure that we’re protecting the local environment as the work gets done.

They’ll also go in to make sure that there’s nothing dangerous about the environment so that the workers can get their jobs done safely. It’s a super important job, and as governments expect more from companies to make sure their projects are ecologically sound, it’ll only become more in-demand.

Health Professional

Hang on - isn’t this article supposed to be about people working in construction? Well the full job title for this role is an Occupational and Environmental Health Professional. While it’s not one that you’d hear about in school, this job is super important. As a health professional, your job is basically making sure that your work site is safe by coming up with plans based on good practice as well as any laws and regulations.

You’ll also be expected to make sure those plans are being followed through on by doing regular inspections of the site. If something does happen, you’ll also be tasked with putting together a report about what went wrong, as well as helping injured workers return to the workplace.

Safety at work is one of the top concerns in construction, so workers with attention to detail, planning skills and being able to communicate well are in high-demand.

The construction industry is massive, with a range of jobs to match.
