Overview
  • If you dream of adventure, doing exciting work alongside a great team and having a career for life, you need to check out the mining industry.

Here’s a scenario for you. You head to work, barely saying hi to anybody in the morning before you sit down in your open plan office and start working on your solo project. After eating your microwaved meal at your desk, you find yourself silently staring at the little clock in the corner of your screen until it hits 5pm. Once work finishes you walk right out the door without saying a word and head home.

Does that sound like a total nightmare? We’ve got some good news for you. You’re not alone, and there’s a career path out there that’s perfect for anyone looking to make friends for life. If you dream of adventure, doing exciting work alongside a great team and having a career for life, you need to check out the mining industry.

Because a lot of mining projects can be in regional or remote locations, many of the roles will be listed as FIFO (fly-in-fly-out) or DIDO (drive-in-drive-out). FIFO/DIDO workers will typically travel into project sites, and stay there for the duration of their rosters (a.k.a. a swing). While there, they get all of their accommodation and meals taken care of, as well as access to amenities like pools, gyms or entertainment facilities. Basically, if you’re out on a swing, you’ll be eating, sleeping and working alongside your teammates. They’ll be going through all the same stuff that you are while you’re away from your hometown, so culturally there’s a strong emphasis on looking out for each other on and off-shift.

Some people enjoy living and working near other people involved in the mining industry so much that they opt to live full-time in residential mining communities. These give you a rare opportunity to live and work in some really unique locations. You have an opportunity in the resources sector to make some great memories, share stories and do something really unique in one of Australia’s largest industries.
