Waiter
Do you find yourself reviewing the menu before heading to the newest restaurant in town and recommending your top picks for your friends? If you love learning the story behind the food and drinks that arrive on your table, working as a waiter can be a great shout.
As a waiter you’re on the front lines of a guest or customer’s experience, helping them have a great time and make memories. As a waiter, you’ll need to have a valid Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification, and be over 18. The job involves being great at customer service, knowing the menu inside and out, and being able to juggle multiple tasks at once, and being thorough with things like cleanliness, keeping stock and maintaining work areas.
Events Coordinator
If you always find yourself putting up your hand to plan your mate’s birthday party, or end up in the formal committee at school, you should definitely take a look at becoming an events coordinator. Some of the biggest and most important events in people’s lives happen in function rooms and hotels, and it can be your job to help make them come to life.
Think weddings, corporate events, panels and conferences. Coordination and communication is key in this role - you’ll be helping handle a lot of moving parts, and making adjustments when the plans change. You’ll be the point of contact between the sales, property departments and customers, making sure everyone’s happy and on the same page.
Commis / Apprentice Chef
A commis, also known as a junior or apprentice chef, is a great way to get a feel for all of the different roles happening in a professional kitchen. As a commis, you’re usually assisting the chefs de partie, who are in charge of each part of the kitchen. That means you get the tricks of the trade while constantly being introduced to new techniques, ideas and recipes.
If you can’t get enough of shows like Chef’s Table, love the feeling of seeing people dig in at a dinner party you organised and want to be surrounded by great food, starting as a commis is a great way to get a taste of food service. As a commis you’ll need to be able to stick to a recipe and work quickly, but always with an eye for quality, cleanliness and safety.
Reception
Reception may look easy from a guest’s side of the counter, but often a receptionist can make or break someone’s stay with a hotel. You might take someone’s honeymoon to the next level or make a home-sick business traveller feel at home, or simply make people’s travel experience as seamless as possible. If you love that feeling of brightening someone’s day with a simple act, or going the extra mile to take something from good to great, a role in reception could be a great shout.
Receptionists need to be super-organised and great at making sure all the details are correct. You’ll be dealing with super-important information like room keys, departure times, arranging transportation and more. Plus, communication skills are vital - not just for talking to guests and providing recommendations or handling complaints, but also coordinating with other staff members.
Bartender
If you’re great at putting together a cocktail night for your mates, or always picking the best wine for the table’s budget when you’re out at a restaurant, a job as a bartender could be a great way to use your skills to pay the bills. As a bartender you’ll want to not just know your cocktail recipes and drinks menus back-to-front, but how your drinks complement the food as well.
For this role you’ll also need an RSA and be over 18. You’ll also want great people skills, and be excellent at keeping everything organised, clean and hygienic.
So, if you’re keen to enter the never-dull world of hospitality, and have access to career development and opportunities all over the world, an entry level position at Marriott is a great place to start.
