Let’s face it - now more than ever it’s pretty easy to miss the boat on getting your ducks in a row, and miss the cut-off for that course you had your eye on. As they say in the classics - we’re here now, and while you might be tearing your hair out about what you’re going to do now, there’s way more options out there than people would have you believe:

Do some work experience in a field you’re interested in

There’s such a pressure to head right out of high school into uni, to then spend 3+ years studying something you don’t even know you like or not. I know I spent about 2 years of my degree thinking I wanted to do what I majored in, until I actually did some work experience and realised I hated it. Not the end of the world, but doing a bit of interning and shadowing would have definitely saved me a headache down the line. If you do end up loving your work experience, it’s also a nice little addition to your resume, that can help set you apart from the competition.

Check out some courses with more frequent intakes

Semesters and trimesters are one way of doing things, but there’s loads of institutions out there offering intakes which don’t follow the normal patterns. For example, if you’re interested in learning more about health sciences or complementary medicine, Endeavour College of Natural Health actually offers monthly intakes for their Diploma of Health Science, which you can take a look at over here. That means if you’ve missed a deadline for whatever reason, it’s easy to kick off your journey when you’re ready, rather than jumping into something too quickly.

Work on that side hustle or hobby

What’s the rush to jump into a course? That time between finishing high school and starting a course or full-time work is a golden opportunity to pursue some of those passion projects you couldn’t get to while your head was in the books. While you’re waiting for the next intake, why not give yourself a challenge or goal like finally getting that Depop profile going, or making a pilot episode of that podcast you and your mates have been joking about for months? Side hustles and hobbies are also great ways to build up some versatile skills if you’re looking to et into a creative industry.

Any way you spin it, just because you missed the boat on those semester or trimester intakes doesn’t mean that you have to sit on your hands until the next round. There’s loads of opportunities to make the most of this little in-between time, and you get to decide what you’re going to do with it!

Don’t forget, if you’re looking to get on the education wagon ASAP, take a quick squiz at Endeavour College’s huge range of monthly intake courses, including Diploma of Health Science, Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition and Dietetic Medicine), Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy). Plus if you’re keen you can jump on one of our two Undergraduate Certificate Courses which currently have CSP (commonwealth Supported Places) available if you act quick.
