How To Motivate Yourself To Work Or Study At Home
The world is rapidly changing. That shouldn't be news to anyone unless you've been living under a rock. However, don't panic!
Working and studying are having to fit into coronavirus' schedule and as a result, it's left most of us staying at home. And if you're like me, chances are you're probably wondering how the hell you're supposed to motivate yourself to work and study from bed.
Trust me, there's nothin' like couping up in bed but it's easy to get comfortable and lose sight of all responsibilities. If your work or studies have gone online, here is how to keep grinding amongst the chaos.
1. Start your day normally and find a routine
Set an alarm. Wake up. Have breakfast. Brush your teeth. Get dressed (potentially in something more comfortable than you would normally wear to school or work but still put some dang clothes on).
Play out your morning as normal, knowing that this is a day to get stuff done!
This morning routine will bleed into the rest of your day, making everything feel as normal as possible. Then, work on creating a routine. How long do you want to spend on each task? When will you break? Treat! It! Like! Any! Other! Day!
2. Have a workspace
Hopefully there is a desk or table somewhere at home where you can set up your laptop and notebooks. Instead of working from your bed or couch and cursing your back to an eternity of pain, find a place where you can be comfortable and get into the work mindset.
And don't be afraid to make your space your space if you catch my drift. Make it as zen as possible! Love plants? Surround yourself in 'em. Wanna feel like an absolute boss? Set up dual screens and off you go, baby!
3. Schedule, prioritise and take it easy
You're held accountable when working from home, which can feel a little frazzling because you want to seem like you're super productive.
But see it this way, you're kind of your own boss. And what do bosses do? They schedule. They have a list of priorities.
So do just that. Break everything down into segments and start small. Accomplish everything one step at a time without getting overwhelmed and take pride in checking them off of your 'to do' list.
Keep in mind, you can accomplish a hell of a lot in a day if you put your mind to it. So blast some bangers, whether that be 70's rock or instrumental music from your fave fantasy films, and get in the zone.
4. Get rid of your distractions
If you have the attention span of a goldfish, like me, distractions are an issue when you're left to your own devices. I'm not talking about the stereotypical social media either. I will bake a cake, read a book, design clothes for my dogs, learn a piece on violin and iron all my clothes before doing what actually has to be done. I am a procrastinating wizard.
But here's the trick. Tell your fam and friends that you're busy, seclude yourself from everyone, turn your phone on airplane mode and only let yourself muck around during your assigned break time and when everything is finished for the day.
5. Give yourself a break
When it hits that time, it's time to go wild! Read, write, draw, call your mates, jam on your guitar, pick up a new hobby, potentially come up with a cure for coronavirus?!
Find a healthy balance of grinding and chillin' like a villain!
It'll feel a little whack working from home for a red hot minute, but you'll get used to it. If anything, it's a gnarly skill to have to be able to self motivate.
