I Had No Idea What To Do After High School
My mates all had grand plans. One had an internship, one had an apprenticeship, one was travelling the world and a few were off to uni or TAFE.
They all seemed so sure of their arrangements after high school, and I felt like the odd one out. Not only was I lacking in plans, I literally had no idea what I wanted to do after school.
I knew things were bad when I saw a tacky inspirational quote stuck up in my mum’s office saying, “my future is so bright, I’m going to need sunnies”. I know it sounds ridiculous, but my stomach genuinely dropped. My future didn't look bright at all, just unclear. I was so confused.
I was embarrassed when family and friends would ask “what now?” and I’d stare at them blankly as if they’d spoken in another language.
I was scared of seeming unmotivated and even a little stupid for not knowing what I wanted to do with my life.
I felt behind all of my peers, who all seemed to have glamorous post-school plans.
How come everyone had miraculously woken up knowing what they wanted to do with their lives?
But that’s the real kicker. I've learnt most people don't know what they want to do, like me.
Some mates dropped out of internships and changed degrees at uni. Others second-guessed their plans and started fresh. So many mates had no idea what they wanted to do.
I was not alone. Nor was I without resources.
That’s where The National Careers Institute comes in. They offer authoritative and accurate careers information and support.
On the YourCareer website, there is information on learning and training options, how to get job ready, work support and career resources that cover many industries.
The School Leavers Information Kit also has resources and information to explore education, training and work options, for this year and beyond.
There's also a School Leavers Information Service you can call on 1800 CAREER for more tailored support or guidance.
I’m not kidding. I called 1800 CAREER and told them how confused I felt when it came to post-school plans. With the help of the National Careers Institute, I’m now studying film and I love it. Who'd have thought?
Check out the National Careers Institute here. They know how isolating and confusing it can feel to have no idea what to do after high school.
