If you’re doing the hard slog through Year 12, it can be hard to think about anything other than all the exams and assignments you’ve got coming up. Which kinda sucks when you’re being forced to choose what you want to do after you graduate and you literally have no time to do any sort of research into it.

When we did a big survey and asked you guys about how much you knew about post school study options, 27% said they felt they had no understanding of private education, 23% had no understanding of traineeships and 21% had no understanding of apprenticeships (only 3% of you said you no understanding of uni, so at least we’ve got one area covered).

This isn’t ideal–when you’re finishing school you need to have all the information about all the options out there so you don’t end up going down a path that’s completely wrong for you (like I did).

So, here’s a few things that nobody tells you about your options after high school:

1. You can get a degree without going to uni

Even though we automatically associate getting a degree with going to uni, there’s other ways to get your qualification. One of these ways is through options like independent business schools. Basically, these are private education providers that specialise in one area, like business.

They’re a pretty bloody good option if you’re worried about getting lost in the system at uni because private providers are generally smaller scale and offer a more tight-knit community.

2. You don’t need to be stuck in a classroom to study

While there are a tonne of options that’ll plonk you behind a desk for another three to five years, there’s also heaps that won’t. Online classes alone give you the freedom to study where and when you want–there’s nothing stopping you from getting some work done wearing your pyjamas in bed while watching Netflix or in the car while you go on a road trip with your mates.

On top of this, heaps of universities and private providers have international partnerships which means you can do some of your studies or get work experience in a completely different part of the world if you get itchy feet.

3. You can finish studying quicker than you realise

While traditional degrees can take anywhere up from three years to finish, there’s no reason why you can’t speed things up a lil. Private providers are starting to split the school year into trimesters–while you might get a little less time on break, you can finish up heaps faster which gives you a head start on getting out in the real world and getting a job.

If going down the non-uni path is sounding pretty good, we reckon you should check out Kaplan Business School. You won’t get thrown into the deep end and you’ll be a name, not a number. Kaplan offer a Bachelor of Business with a tonne of different majors (like Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism, Finance and Management) and have campuses in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Plus, they help you get real world experience so that when you graduate, you actually know what you’re doing.
