When you think of apprenticeships or traineeships, you might imagine not getting paid, having to work long hours or dedicating years to it before you get the job you want. 

You might also assume you’re too young - or even too old to get started. But we’re here to tell you that that couldn’t be further from the truth. 

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine formal study with on-the-job training and help create our future workforce as well as build local businesses and communities. It’s a great way to gain a nationally recognised qualification and earn while you learn.

There are heaps of options - whether you’re in school, in your twenties or looking to upskill in your current career. So we’re here to set the record straight and help you start a career you’ll love and gain the many benefits of an apprenticeship or traineeship. 

1. There are school-based apprenticeships and traineeships available

If you’re in school and already daydreaming about starting your career, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are an awesome way to set yourself up while you're in year 10, 11 or 12. 

From top apprenticeships like electrical, plumbing, carpentry and auto and top traineeships like retail, early childhood, business, real estate and hospitality, there’s a massive range of industries to get stuck into. Your careers adviser can help you decide what you might be interested in and whether studying while working is a good fit for you.

2. You’ll land an awesome new support network 

Landing an apprenticeship or traineeship isn’t just about gaining new skills and working towards the career you want.  It’s also about making new friends, valuable connections in the industry and finding a support network to help you along the way.

Lots of the people you’ll be working with will have heaps in common with you and share your goals and dreams - which means informative and motivating convos on the reg.

You will also have a great idea about how much you will earn and the conditions that you are entitled to.

3. Smart and Skilled provides government-subsidised training in quality courses

Apprentices and trainee’s student fees are funded under the NSW Government’s Smart and Skilled Program.  Which means, if you’re eligible, then you may not have to pay for the training at all – it's fully subsidised. Pretty cool, right?

4. Better late than never 

If you’ve resigned yourself to the fact that it's too late to start a school based apprenticeship or traineeship, we’re here to let you know that it’s never, ever too late. 

Talking to someone about your options now means you might become an apprentice or trainee after you leave school to kick your career off nice and early.

A Lot of people start careers much later in life than you’d expect. It’s always going to be worth pursuing your passions - even if it’s a little later than you imagined. Apprenticeships and traineeships will offer the support, encouragement and inspiration to just go for it.
