This Is The Perfect Example Of Carving Your Own Path
Being from Newcastle, it’s kind of a prerequisite that you have to be a surfer. If not, the sunkissed-haired, tanned gods curse you with nothing but misfortune... I'm kidding I'm kidding! But seriously, all my mates were surfing 24/7 so I gave it a red hot go. Let's just say I'm the biggest kook you'll ever meet and shouldn't be allowed to touch a surf board, let alone paddle on it.
That's not to say I can't appreciate everything about surfing, avidly watch it from the shore and quote every line from 'Surfs Up'.
So, when I heard we'd be chatting to professional surfer Laura Enever, I was, without sounding too much like a tryhard surfer, stooookkkeddd.
Here's the goss: power-house Laura Enever got hooked on surfing at nine years old and started competing at ten. She was forced to compete in the boy's division as there weren't any girls competing in Sydney's Northern Beaches. By the time she was 18, she started her brilliant run on the World Tour.
But it soon got to the point where Laura was doing 20 contests a year and craved to do something else. Something that would fuel her adrenaline and get her out of her comfort zone. After a few trips around the globe, one of which in Fiji where Laura surfed ginormous ten-foot waves, she realised that surfing big waves felt better than winning contests.
Now, no matter if you can stand up on a board or have never touched one, Laura Enever is someone you want to hear from. This is a girl that went against the grain to follow an unconventional path. She even made a film along the way called 'Undone', following Laura leaving the WSL Championship Tour to explore the unpredictable world of big-wave surfing.
Lucky for you, you can learn more about Laura's journey of navigating all the self-doubt, hesitation, anxiety, and confusion that comes with following your passions, making pivotal changes and dealing with... life, really.

And now, to leave you with a quote from the famous Big Z, "You know, kid, never give up. Find a way, 'cause that's what winners do."
