Should you commit to your dreams, never backing down even when the stakes are high, or should you have a backup plan in case things go awry? Wow, that rhymed...

Ok, say I wanted to be a poet. In this invariably unpredictable world, figuring out whether I should give poetry my full undivided attention and passion or creating a solid backup plan that incorporates my passion but is seen to be a bit more 'safe' is frazzling!

If you're confused as much as I am, here are some pros and cons of backup plans that have helped me.

PROS

1. Takes away a lot of pressure

It’s obvious why people lean on backup plans - they release the dang pressure!

It’s natural to be anxious for the future, especially when you’re pursuing a career that doesn’t have a clear path for success. If you're worried about the risk, having a backup plan takes that worry off your shoulders, allowing you to focus on your dreams with ease. You can always fall back on your back up plan when things go south.

2. Sense of security

Backup plans give you a sense of security and safety. To be completely honest, when it comes to careers, you need to be making enough mulla to live! If you find yourself up sh*t creek without a paddle, your backup plan may help you afford to eat.

3. You have the freedom to change your mind more easily than others

It’s pretty crazy that we’re taught to be single-minded when it comes to careers. Like, hello! You might change your mind! And that’s fine. That sweet backup plan you worked on may just end up being a perfect choice for your career.

Oh and guess what, you can still pursue other dreams for the rest of your life. You don’t have to be locked in NOW!

CONS

1. You can develop a restrictive mindset

Backup plans are a harness. Whilst that's good, I can't help but be reminded of that scene in one of the Batman movies (sorry if my retelling is dusty, it's been a while since I watched it). Batman is in like a deep hole or jail or something and needs to get out by climbing. He tries again and again, always falling back down. Finally, he takes off his harness. Now, there's a real risk of him falling and dying. With that knowledge, he finally climbs out unscathed.

My point? Besides Batman being a certified legend, it's that you won't die without a backup plan. Sometimes, it takes getting rid of the harness to actually get results, stay driven and motivated. There's nothing dampening your goal desire.

2. You have less time to focus on other hobbies

Whilst working on a backup plan, which for most people involves studying, you obviously have less time to focus on your dreams. It can be pretty full-on juggling two things at once. You may have to blow off rugby practice to study or work on an assessment between gigs... This may be a sacrifice that you're not willing to take.

3. You don't have as many options

You may feel inclined to give up your dreams when the going gets tough and fall back on that backup plan of yours prematurely. You might regret this in the future... but like I've said, you can change your mind! You don't have to commit to the ONE career for the rest of your existence. Send it wherever, whenever!
