Getting a job and earning your own money is one of the most empowering parts of getting older. But when you’re a high school leaver with very little experience, it’s not always easy to find employment or land the job. And unfortunately, having a disability generally adds to the challenge. Thankfully though, there’s a new government initiative to help those with disabilities transition from school to work.

It’s been a long time coming but the National Disability Insurance Scheme is finally being rolled out across Australia. For those who have a disability or who have friends or family with a disability, this is awesome news. It’s basically a new way of providing support to those with disabilities and it works in a few different ways.

One of them is the Disability Support For School Leavers program, which is specifically for Year 12 students who are getting ready to finish school and looking to get started in the workforce.

How does it work?

It works in two basic ways. First, the program aims to help people with disabilities to find and maintain jobs. This means getting help and support from a network of people who can teach you what prospective employers are looking for, including how to write a resume, how to present in a job interview and the organisational skills that are necessary to maintain a work routine.

Second, it provides incentives for employers who encourage, assist and are inclusive of people with disabilities in the workplace. This means that employers are encouraged to provide support, training and resources, funding assistance and wage subsidies to people with disabilities. So basically it will mean there are more jobs around and more employers who are willing to employ people with disabilities.

How do I apply?

To apply, you need to submit a claim to the NDIS, which will include your age, residence and the particulars of your disability. For more info, check out the application details on the NDIS website. It could be life changing.

Some extra support for you

If your disability has prevented you from finding a job or has led to you losing a job because you’re scared of the way you might be hindered, judged or perceived, talk to ON-Q. This organisation will help you not only get a job, but help you get the confidence to enter the workplace with a genuine desire to contribute and excel. If you’re unemployed and living with a disability in northern NSW and South East Qld, pop in your details here.
