  • Tackle your travel plans with a positive mindset, plenty of patience and the right balance of alone time and you'll be cheering!

Are you thinking about taking a trip with your partner? It can feel high-stakes, but if the conditions are right, and you’ve got a good mindset, it can be an amazing way to take your connection to the next level.

Why it’s fun to travel with a partner

The only thing better than having the experience of a lifetime is getting to share it with your special someone. You get to step outside of the everyday and discover new experiences together, making memories that you can cherish forever.
It’s definitely way less lonely than travelling by yourself. You’ll have someone with you to be that stable presence when you’re feeling a little homesick or working through culture shock.

Plus, I reckon a great travelling partner is one who also encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone a little. While doing a trip your way can be pretty cool, there’s something special about discovering a new interest or passion.

What are the risks when you're travelling with your partner?

When you’re travelling, you’re going to see each other in ways and states that you might not be totally used to. If you’re not living together already, you’re probably used to seeing each other when you’re both in good moods and feeling up to hanging out, but you don’t always have that luxury when you’re joined at the hip for a couple of weeks.

Also, travelling is just a bit stressful sometimes! You might get sick, tired, grumpy or just a little overwhelmed, and it’s important to know when to give each other a little breathing room to avoid an argument.

If you’re not super confident that you can handle being with each other 24/7 for an extended period of time, maybe test the waters with a weekend away before jumping right into a big backpacking trip.

Our tips for travelling with a partner:

Be prepared to give and take. Wherever you go, there’s bound to be some things that you really wanna see but your partner isn’t that into, and vice versa. However you decide to divvy up the activities, try and be a good sport when it’s not your turn.

Also, don’t be afraid to get a little quiet time now and again to recharge your batteries. A nap or just a couple of hours reading a good book will leave you feeling fresh and ready to hang out again.

Finally, something’s bound to go wrong when you’re travelling. In fact, it’s part of the fun! Even if you lose your temper a little, don’t take it out on your travelling buddy. Take a breath, get a little space if you need to, then figure out your next steps.

Travelling as a pair can feel high-risk,  but the rewards are pretty amazing if you do it right. No matter whether you decide to ease into it with a long weekend, or go for it and hit up Europe for a few months, we’re sure you’ll have an amazing time.
