Why You Should Stop Letting Your Parents Spoil You
Overview
- It's nobody's fault! Your parents love you enough to spoil you rotten and who doesn't love things coming easily! No shade!
- But here is what your fate could look like if you keep letting them spoil you
- Don't worry, we give you tips on how to yeet out of the 'spoiled kid' category too 😂
I don't wanna be a wanker but I have to be honest. There's one type of person I can't stand...
The adults that could still give Veruca Salt a run for her money:
The adults that were spoiled brats as kids. The adults that can't really cop adulthood at all...
If you reckon life at home is just a little too laidback -- if you dunno the difference between a washing machine and a dryer, if you always have your parents' credit card because you've never had a casual job of your own, if you get grumpy if your mum makes you a meal that you don't like but refuse to make something else for yourself... it may be high time to check yourself before you wreck yourself... no offense. 😂
Your parents spoil you out of love. I'm telling you this out of love as well. Here's what may happen if you let your 'rents spoil you.
1. Basic tasks may not come easily
I have 23-year-old mates that walk into a kitchen as if it's Narnia. The pots, pans and stove tops leave them clueless. Other mates can't do their laundry or can't book appointments on their own. Some aren't confident in simple workplace environments since they never had a job in high school, or even in uni.
Of course, I still flick my mum messages on the reg asking "how do I get this stain out of my top?" or "how long should I cook this spinach pie for in the oven?". No one will ever be fully prepared for adulthood. But don't go in with a severe disadvantage! Learn some basic skills!
2. You may not be very independent
People that were spoiled as kids sometimes aren't as ready to take on the world gung-ho. They may have mental breakdowns when the smallest thing shakes their world, or get frazzled when they have more than one task to do. I knew people at uni who would be crying if they had two assignments due on the same day... and I went to a film school. Trust me, the stakes weren't that high. But they couldn't handle it!
3. You might not understand the value of money
I have friends that still live on mummy's credit card. 😮💨 Eek.
They buy things they don't need because they can. They're not the best at paying people back, people that actually worked for their money. Ironically enough, they're suuuuper stingy with their own money.
Learning how to make your own money is important. It can be exciting, thrilling and empowering too! So maybe hand back the crisp fifty your 'rents gave you and work out how you could make $50 on your own.
4. You may not be able to cop failure
Things have come easily for you... so what happens when they don't? Failed job interviews, rejections from crushes, even just missing the bus may stir you in a frenzy.
Children who got everything from their 'rents may have never had to learn how to fight for something. So after failure, you may just throw in the towel too soon as a way to avoid any potential obstacles in your way.
5. You may love a cheeky whinge
The weather? Not hot enough. The cake you had for dessert? Too sweet. That couch at your friends' house? Too uncomfortable. The bday prezzie your mate gave to you? You already have something similar. *Sigh*
If you’re used to getting what you want for a long time, then you may start to find that any little inconvenience is worth a complaint. But unfortunately, no one loves a whiner. 😮💨
✨ It's nobody's fault! Your parents love you enough to spoil you rotten, and who doesn't love things coming easily? Absolutely no shade whatsoever. But what can you do about it?
Offer to help make dinner or do the washing up. Take the initiative to clean your room. Practice hobbies and start new ones even if you suck. Get a casual job. Volunteer. Be aware when you're complaining. Pay your friends back for dinner they bought you...
You're obviously self aware enough to have read this article so don't worry, you're already on your way! You've got this!
