Tips For Applying For (And Actually Landing) A Job
Alright, so school’s done, and it’s time to start earning a living. You’ve spent your school years doing the hard slog and you’re ready to move onto something bigger and better.
Depending on things like the time of year, the type of industry, where you live and what qualifications you have, you might find that landing yourself a job can be more difficult than you originally expected.
1. Find the right job
You’d be shocked how much more successful you’ll be when you apply for a job that you actually want. And not just one you want – the one you’re actually passionate about.
Realistically you’re going to have far more chance of landing a job you are clearly passionate about and more likely to excel in the role if you love what you are doing. If you get turned down for a job and don’t feel any disappointment, then it’s probably a good thing that you didn’t get the gig. What’s the point of applying for something you don’t deep down care for?
2. Get qualified
Once you know what type of work you’re after, it’s time to get yourself qualified. Depending on the job, this can happen in many forms. If you wanna be a doctor, you’ll probs have to head to uni. But with some careers, you can actually start working at the same time as completing your qualifications.
VERTO offers a range of options that’ll get you all the qualifications you need to score yourself a job. If you’re looking at a trade, then they can help hook you up with employers looking for a new trainee or apprentice. They’ve got a tonne of jobs across NSW so check ‘em all out and get applying over here.
There’s also a bunch of other courses you can do through VERTO Training which aim to build up your skillset and make you more employable with nationally-recognised qualifications. These are all online, so it doesn’t matter where you’re based on what you’re doing – there’s bound to be something you’re keen to get started on. Check them out and register your interest over here.
3. Nail your application
Okay, once you’ve got all the skills and all the know-how, it’s time to actually convince somebody that that’s true. This can be harder than you think, as many job-application processes don’t give you the chance to actually get in front of an employer and show them first-hand that you can do the job (at least not straight away).
Employers often have a lot of applicants to choose from, and rather than meet them all face to face, they usually just choose a few to move onto the interview stage based off their resumes. Here’s a few tips for your resume that’ll help get you over the line.
4. Get interview ready
Got called in for an interview? Nice work, it means you nailed your application!
Interviews can range from the super-relaxed and casual, to the very, very formal. Your hopefully-soon-to-be employer could be trying to suss out if you’re the right cultural fit for the company, or they could be working out if you really know as much as your resume implied.
Either way, it is possible to prepare for interviews. If you’re interviewing for a position at your local Woolworths or trying to land the apprenticeship that’ll set up your career, you need to put the prep work in; learn about the company, learn more about the role, think about why you actually want it and what you can bring to the table. Be confident and be yourself. You can check out more tips on smashing your job interview right here.
Reckon you’re ready to start looking at all and applying for all the jobs out there? The best place to start is right here on Year13; we’ve got a tonne of jobs ready for you to suss out and apply for including apprenticeship and traineeships through VERTO. Check it all out over here.
