Here's How You Can Turn Sport Into Your Career
Overview
- A career in sports might be more achievable than you think
- You don't have to be a professional athlete to work in sport
Some people long for a career in sports but treat it as if it’s some far-away, unachievable dream. Something that’s nice to look at, but to consider trying to reach it would be, well… you’d be kidding yourself.
However, a career in sports might be more achievable than you think. Whether you’re the star of your local squad who dreams of making it in the big leagues, or the avid sports fan who would do anything to get to know all your favourite players – there’s a way for you to turn these visions into a reality.
If you’re liking the sound of all this but have got absolutely no clue where to start your journey towards a life in the world of sports, then look no further, we’re here to help ya out.
For the athletes
This one goes out to the naturally talented athletes who feel like they might be good enough to carve out a career in a certain sport, but they’ve got no idea how to go about it. Applying for a sports scholarship could be the perfect way for you to really focus on your sport and, it also means not having to sideline your studies.
There are sport scholarships available at universities within Australia, but plenty of athletes head to countries like the US where the college system allows them to combine sport and study in a more career focused way.
For everyone else
If you don’t think you’re a top-tier athlete (we can’t all be the next Sam Kerr or winning gold at the Olympics), but still wanna spend every moment you can immersed within sport, then you should consider becoming a professional in a related field.
There’s a wealth of different paths you could take to become a figure within the community of your favourite netball/soccer/footy/cricket/skydiving/tennis/javelin/hopscotch team. Sure, you’ve got gigs like coaching and your more fitness and heath focused careers (like personal training or physiotherapy which every team and athlete needs). But, there’s also a whole range of careers off the field and on the sidelines that can feed your sports obsession. You could go down the media route and become a sports journo or a commentator. Or, if marketing is more your thing then becoming a sports agent could be on the cards. Or, you could study a course in something more general like sports management which could lead you down a variety of different paths.
So, whether you really are the next big Aussie sports star (don’t forget us when you’re famous) or someone who has a passion for the industry and it looking to find a way into it, there’s plenty of options for ya.
