Overview
  • Taking some time off could have helped me figure out my interests and avoid studying something I wasn't truly passionate about.
  • Feeling unsure about your next steps? The University of New England (UNE) offers a range of flexible study options for when you are ready. Check out their website to see what might be a good fit for your future!

So, you just finished school. Everyone's asking, "What are you doing next?" Uni seems like the obvious answer, right? Maybe. I jumped straight into a degree after graduation, and honestly? Looking back, I wish I'd waited a bit. Here's why:

I Had No Idea What I Wanted to Do

I went to uni because I didn't know what else to do. Sound familiar? I picked a degree (PR & Advertising) because it sounded…okay. Turns out, I wasn't passionate about it at all. I wish I'd taken some time to explore different career paths, get some work experience, and figure out what actually excited me. Imagine knowing what you love before spending years and thousands of dollars on a degree.

Balancing Everything Was a Struggle

Juggling uni, a part-time job, and a social life right after school was tough. Everyone tells you these are the "best years," but they also expect you to be super organized and focused on your studies. It's a lot to handle! Taking a break before uni can give you time to develop better time management skills and a clearer sense of priorities.

I Could Have Made a Much More Informed Decision

These days, there are tons of resources to research careers. You can check out social media, read industry reports, even use AI tools like UNE's Future of Work Tool to see how different jobs might evolve. Imagine having all that information before choosing a degree! You could pick something that's not only interesting but also has a good future. I wish I'd had those resources when I was 18.

Online Learning is So Much Better Now

When I went to uni, online learning was kind of an afterthought. Now, it's amazing! Universities like UNE have fully online programs, 24/7 tutor support, and tons of experience with distance education. If I'd waited, I could have studied with way more flexibility, fitting it around my work and other commitments.

Don't Get Me Wrong, Uni is Great…Eventually

I'm not saying uni is bad. It's just that for me, going straight after school wasn't the right move. Taking some time to explore, gain experience, and figure things out would have made a huge difference. It's okay to not have all the answers right now. You've got time. Explore your options, and when you're ready, uni will be there. Check out UNE's website to see what options are available for mature-aged students – even if that's a few years down the track for you!
