5 Reasons You Should Go To A Uni Out of Your Home Town
Overview
- Deciding which unis to apply for?
- Here's why you should consider unis away from home.
If you’re in Year 11 & 12 right now, you’re probably in the process of working out which unis you want to put as your top preferences. Sure, you could just put down whichever uni is closest to your place, or you could take a slight risk (that will definitely pay off) and apply for a university outside of your home town or city, like ANU in Canberra for example. Here are just a few reasons why you should.
You’ll make new friends
Unless you’ve got Ferris Bueller levels of confidence, making friends at uni isn’t easy. But when you’re living in a new city, making friends becomes a much more natural process. First of all, you’ll be living with other students in uni accommodation, so you’ll have at least one similarity already and be spending a lot of time with them. Plus, a lot of you will be sharing the experience of living in a new place which is a peak bonding experience. And as we all know, peak bonding experiences = lifelong friendships.
Independence
Put simply, moving away from home is the easiest way to give yourself the independence you’ve been craving. You’ll be 100s of kilometres away from your parents, living by yourself (or with housemates) and you’ll be thrown into the world of doing your own chores, making your own dinner and getting between A and B on your own. This might be scary at first, but once you get into the groove of things, you’ll be living your best life, learning about yourself and growing into the person you’re meant to become.
Be part of the community
When you go to a uni close to you, the temptation is to just show up for class and then get straight back on the bus and head home. But when you live on campus, you’re soooo much more likely to get involved in the community aspect of uni. Maybe you’ll join a sports team, a few clubs or societies, maybe even find a job on campus. You’ll become a part of the community, rather than just someone who shows up for a class three times a week – and that’s the best way to have a memorable university experience.
Escape familiarity
Finally, moving away from home for uni is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for adventure. Most people only go to uni once, so make the most of your time studying! Living in a new place is always an exciting time, the places are new, the people are new and there’s so much to explore! It’s also an opportunity to reinvent yourself and become the person you want to be without the restraints of familiarity holding you back.
So, if you like the sound of a new chapter in a tight-knit community which is the perfect environment to make lifelong friends, why not apply to a university away from home? If the lifestyle of a city like Canberra takes your fancy, head over to their website now to find your dream course.
