About University

Ultimately, it’s the place you go to if you want to get yourself a ‘degree’ qualification in an area of study. Universities are generally considered to offer the highest levels of education if you want to go ALL the way! Degrees are usually very theory-based and academic, rather than trade-like, hands-on or practical, so be prepared for lots more book studies, exams and essays!

Am I suited to University?

People usually obtain degrees for professions in which you need one as a minimum requirement to practice in, like law, medicine or teaching. Sometimes people want a university degree

because they want to be the best or excel in what they do. Some people want to find out everything there is to know about a subject, or want to specialise in certain areas of learning.

You will need to get reasonably good marks at school to be able to enter university, depending what you want to study, so check out what the requirements are and work towards it. If you don’t go to uni now, you can always go as a mature aged student later on with better chances after other study or work.

What can I study at University?

Universities usually have every subject you can imagine, so whatever you want to study, they’ve got it on offer, as long as it’s high-end education. This means you can study all kinds of subjects in the fields of Law, Medicine, Sciences, Humanities, Health, Engineering, Education and the Arts.

How does it all work at university?

There are levels of degrees. If you’re going straight into your first one in a certain field of study, then it usually takes 3 or 4 years to finish your course, and it’s called an Undergraduate Degree. After that, Postgraduate Degrees are available for you, like Masters and Doctorates and Professorships if you want to go extreme!

Universities are big places, with lots of facilities and resources for their students, and lots of different buildings, campuses, and teachers or lecturers. After knowing everyone at school, you can feel really lost! You’ll meet all kinds of people and have the chance to party if you want, but remember why you’re there. It isn’t like at school where you’re disciplined and watched over, so you need to take care of yourself, decide how much you want to study, and how many lectures you want to attend.

What will university cost me?

You can pay up front or each term, but you’ll be paying thousands of dollars, so many students get government education loans which you’ll be asked to pay back when you get a job!

How will a university education help my career?

Basically, it will help your career if you want to get a job in a field that requires a degree qualification, or if you want to become the best at what you do, or if you want to earn more money, as long as it’s relevant to what you want to do.
