5 Ways To Get Out Of A Slump
To be completely honest, slumps are a reeeal neg out. I mean, even the most motivated, cup-is-half-full people can cop one every now and then.
So, what is a slump? My trusty friend google said that it is 'A period of decline or deterioration, during which a person performs slowly, inefficiently, or ineffectively'. So, in other words, vibes are lost.
How can we find the vibes again? Don't worry, whether you're in a slump because of boredom, loneliness, the weather, hormones, being overwhelmed... whatever the reason may be, here is how to crawl out of it and come out the other side funky and fresh again!
1. Acknowledge it
This is your way of saying, 'alright, I'm in a slump, now let's move past this'.
This can be done by journaling or talking to friends and family members. Sometimes by getting your feelings out there, you're able to find the source/solution to your problems. Put on a snorkel and get deep baby. Dive into the bottom of your brain and do the work to help yourself!
2. Take a left to inspiration station
We feel most motivated and successful when we're in a flow of inspiration. How do we find that?
For me, I feel inspired when I find new music and art, watch movies, read books... I love to watch Ted talks and listen to podcasts. I love learning listening to others, even if their passions and ambitions are completely different from mine. Be open to who and how you can become inspired! Get out there.
3. Think about who you surround yourself with
"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn.
You know when you serve a super nice customer? That makes you feel pretty warm right? But when you serve a customer that razzes you for things out of your control and basically spits in your face. That makes you feel not so warm...
People affect people. Think about who you surround yourself with. Are they always negging out, complaining about their failures and losses, seeing the universe as out to get them and always having a pity party? Or do they strive to have fun, have a laugh, see the silver lining in life and get back up when things get rough?
When you come back from hanging out with a mate, do you feel drained or uplifted? We all deserve to feel uplifted.
4. Shock your system
Yeah, sometimes doing something cold turkey is jarring. Sometimes, it might just work.
Think about it this way, you're in a rut. Don't get comfortable in that rut, shock yourself out of it!
Are you a night-owl? Try waking up early for a week! Are you always glued to technology? Try a digital detox!
Why not go on a camping trip, away from the city or from work. Why not cut out sugar for a while if you know you're eating too much of it... Whatever you think is out of your comfort zone, try it! Shock the system and shake up your routine.
5. Focus on your goals
Humans like feeling like they're striving towards something and becoming a better version of themselves. When we're in a slump, we feel like we're on a road to nowhere.
Keep your dreams in check! Remind yourself why you're doing it all! If you're a bit scatterbrained when it comes to what to do with yourself, having a Post-School Plan may just be a red hot solution. Hasta la vista slump.
