What Really Happens On Your First Day Of Uni
Overview
- As someone who just recently finished their first year of uni I have fallen into the belief that I am the most qualified person to tell you what your first day of uni is really like.
- I've got a timetable and everything. I mean I've got it down to the minute.
- Here is your unofficial timestamped list for what is really going to happen on your first day of uni.
To help shake off the nerves before the day begins try finding a friend to brave the day with you and getting yourself completely ready the night before.
Take the stress away from the little things so that when you wake up you don't have to do a mad dash. Leave that for week two!

9:00am: Wake up
You will begin the day spending an overtly long amount of time getting ready.
The perfect fit seems essential to look cool and make friends, but in reality the effort you put in the first week will not match the energy for the rest of the year.
Don't go wild on an outfit you would never wear again. Looking and feeling good on your first day is more important than wearing in those new doc martins
10:00am: Transport
I don't believe in the world ever aligning enough for you to find the perfect route to uni on your first day. What will ensue is slow walking, trying to figure out if you're following the right crowd, or lining up for a coffee shop.
Take it slow on your first day. I recommend getting there at least 20 minutes before you really need to.
If you miss your bus, train or ferry, you'll then also have a bit of extra time to figure out how else you can get there, or wait for the next one. If you do end up getting there really early, use it as a time to explore. Find your favourite coffee shop, or lunch spot, find all the rooms for your subjects and find a hidden study spot.
11:00am: First class
Your first ever class of uni will feel mind bogglingly familiar. It's like school, but without the teacher knowing you and your parents and every cousin or sibling that has ever been through the school.
Some classes are mandatory with a minimum attendance rate. So make sure you check out your subject outline, which will tell you the details of your subject, before uni starts.
You can even change classes before the census date if you don't feel like the specific tutor is right for you.
My first two semesters I changed classes in my subject's multiple times because of the time of the class (aka the dreaded 9am class) or because I didn't feel like the teacher was right for me.

12:30pm: Lunch
With your first class down, it is definitely time for something to munch on. My biggest recommendation is stick with the people you sat with during class. Hang out with them, get to know them, see if they have similar interests or not.
Lunch is the perfect time to find out all this info, so when you get to your next class you can have something to chat about. You could even invite them or join them in going to any uni events going on in the next few weeks.
1:30pm: Library/explore
After you've had some lunch, you should go explore. Find the library and look for comfy spots to study or eat lunch.
Your first day is the perfect day to do this because you can see which places might be really busy, but have great seating, and where the best spots in the library are.
2:00pm: Home!
Well done, you've made it to the end of your first day!
The first day of uni can be really daunting, but now that you know what to expect you're seriously gonna smash it. And as you can probably tell a day at uni is however long or short you want it to be. Sure some degrees may be a touch more involved than mine, but you've got this!
