When You're The First Friend To Turn 18
Turning 18 is something we look forward to for our entire adolescence. It's an event that can be celebrated for weeks and a time where we expect our entire lives to be flipped on its head.
Being 18 is definitely something worth causing a fuss over, but sometimes it's hard to truly live it up as an 'adult' when your friends are stuck being gross icky 17-year-olds.
Whilst turning 18 will be a milestone, there's some things you should prepare yourself for as officially the oldest (and by default, wisest) of the group.
1. It's going to be frustrating for a while
However, if you’re the old hag of the group, your fresh adulthood is going to feel compromising as you might think you have no one to go out with.
Chances are you’ll spend the weekend scouring your phone in the hopes someone else is blessed with your old and wise age, and it could feel like you’re the only 18 year old to exist, until…
2. You’ll be forced to make friends with other 18 year olds
One of the best things that happened to me when I turned 18 early was the need to find other people my age.
Don't get me wrong, my friend group was and still is full of my ride or die’s, but stepping outside of my circle to find other friends my age was really refreshing.
Obviously, eventually everyone turns 18. But it was nice to feel a part of this cool adult group, even if it's just for a bit.
3. People are going to be asking you for... favours
As you all know, turning 18 comes with some perks. You’ll be living it up with the freedom of being able to legally drink, get brand spankin' new green P plates and the ability to vote, but you'll find that your friends will try their hardest to leech of you and your privileges.
Suddenly every man and their dog will be wondering if you’re going to Dan Murphy’s in the arvo (nudge nudge, wink wink).
4. It’s going to feel like forever until your best friend is 18
Going out with your best friend can change the energy of a night out completely.
The vibes you and your bestie have the potential to bring are incomparable, but the wait is going to be torturous even if there isn't much of an age gap.
5. You’re going to feel the coolest you’ve ever felt
Yes, there are going to be some drawbacks to turning 18 early, but you're still going to be 18. You’re still going to feel the luxury of being a fresh adult, and you’ll be the most interesting and coolest person in your friend group because of it. Enjoy it! Lavish in it! Because soon everyone else is going to reach that point and slowly but surely, adulthood isn’t going to seem that funky.
