When I’m outside of my little work from home bubble, I’m on two extreme opposite ends of the stick. I love a nomadic, dirt cheap holiday in another country but I also crave a bit of fine dining, massages and travelling in luxury.

Deciding on where to spend your dosh on your travels + staying on budget does become quite difficult but here is my (very subjective) definitive list on what’s worth spending a bit extra on during your time away!

Food + drinks

There’s nothing worse than eating on a cheap budget, especially when you’re on the move every day - you need to fuel up, baby! Depending on the country, you can pay for a massive feed that would only get you as far as a small chips in ‘straya, so make sure you set enough money aside + extra according to how much food is at the destination.

Sentimental experiences

Whether you’ve always had a yearning to go to Madison Square Garden or see Hamilton in New York, or maybe visit The Beatles museum in Liverpool, fulfill that dream and go there! No matter how much it’ll set you back, if it makes you happy, set aside some coin for it. Who knows, life isn’t always promised, so don’t waste ya precious holiday time staying in your hotel room!

Tours

Love being a tourist in another city, taking photos at each landmark? Why not use some of your hard saved money on a tour? Take a few hours out from your day to explore the city’s history on a tour bus, monorail, helicopter - whatever floats your boat. Talking about boats, you could also take a ferry!

Non-stop flights

Based on personal experience, I cannot stand a 5+ hour layover. No matter the amount of episodes on Netflix or Spotify playlists I’ve downloaded, a long layover just kills my soul.

Lugging around your carry-on, neck pillow, and all your other small things... I ick just thinking about it. Also, flights are generally booked before anything, so suss out how much extra it costs to get a direct flight to your destination.

Insurance

Trust me when I say, GET TRAVEL INSURANCE! You won’t regret it. Some of you might think it’s a scam, it’s a waste of money, it’s a ploy from seedy travel agents to get you to empty ya pockets but I am living proof that insurance is a necessity.

Without insurance, we would not have gotten our money back from our five-week trip to America, set to go in the midst of the Covid-19 isolation peak.

Or God forbid (not trying to scare you), breaking your arm overseas costs a preeeetty penny in some countries. Don’t get the top stuff if it isn’t necessary but it is worth having some type of cover!
