Overview
  • From really immersing yourself in another culture to becoming more employable, here's why you should pack your bags and move overseas 🌎

It's no secret that Aussies are at the ass-end of space. I mean, some people genuinely don't believe that we exist (for real, check this out). So when we hop on a plane, we might as well stay at our destination for a hot minute to make up for the long, exy flight there.

But that's not the only reason to get out of the country and move overseas. Whether it's Germany, England or South America, packing your bags for a new destination is the epitome of main character moments✨. Here are a few more reasons why you should move somewhere new ASAP.

1. New mates

Whether you're working, volunteering, studying, or experiencing as much as possible, you're gonna meet some unreal mates. Some will end up being funny stories, others will be lifelong friends. Oh and, don't forget overseas romances. Who knows who you'll meet!

2. Easy travel to other places

If you're living in Paris, you best believe you can pop to Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal...actually, anywhere in Europe. We're on a big fat island here in Australia therefore we don't have the luxury of training 🚊 it to another country. So it's safe to say that you'll experience a LOT.

3. Learn a new language

Maybe it's just being able to say "Bonjour, je voudrais un pain au chocolat s'il vous plait.", but hey, you've learned something. That's pretty neat. Learning a country's little idioms and sayings is fun as well.

4. You'll really immerse yourself in another culture

You can't compare spending a few nights in India vs living there, right?! When you're living somewhere, you'll find the parts that tourists don't whilst really getting to know the people - their holidays, food, hobbies, and lifestyle.

You get to experience the marvelously mundane things too - what it's like grocery shopping there, the local commute and the best places to take a stroll.

5. You'll be more employable

Even if you just worked in an Irish pub for a hot minute or studied in Spain, having "lived overseas for a year" on the resume stands the heck out.

It shows independence, resilience, and motivation for getting out there and experiencing life full-throttle. You're more confident, adaptable, innovative, better at communicating and networking...all the good stuff!

Business Insider Australia stated that "More than 80% of employers think you’re better suited for a job if you’ve been travelling".

6. You'll be out of your comfort zone

Things will get frazzling every now and then, especially during your first few days.

How do you get around? Where's a good spot for food or coffee? When will you make friends? 🥵

Groceries are different. Prices are different. The weather is different. You may question yourself a few times "far out, why have I done this? I just want the comfort of my own bed", but this discomfort is what pushes you to become your best, most experienced self. And sooner or later you'll figure out the metro. You'll find a bangin' restaurant and cafe. You'll have a group of mates.

7. You'll have enough stories to write a book

The people you'll meet. The situations you'll get yourself into. The things you'll overhear or witness. You will have a new anecdote for every party. Heck, you'll have enough anecdotes to write a book.

So start packing and bring a pen. That book is waiting to be written!
