If you’ve started a job before, you’re probably pretty familiar with that superannuation form they give you, where you’ve gotta fill in the details of your existing super fund or they pick one for you.

If we’re being honest, quite a few of you have probably just opened up a fresh account rather than having to frustratingly dig around your emails for that member number, and we don’t blame you.

The rules from November 1 2021 are that if you don’t choose a new fund, your work will have to check with the ATO if you have an existing super, known as a 'stapled super fund'.

While ‘stapling’ your super fund makes it easier to find your old accounts, it does mean that if you don’t take a couple of mins to really think about which fund you already have, you could end up sticking with one that could cost you thousands in fees or underperformance, OR puts its money in the hands of companies that you may not be ethically on-board with. This might include issues like tobacco, gambling or live animal exports.

The thing with super is that your money snowballs over time, so taking a little time out now to pick a fund that’s right for you can mean thousands of dollars’ difference down the line.

Your Super, your future

From humble beginnings as somewhere to chuck your retirement fund, we now know that your super has a tangible impact on some seriously important things.

If you’re keen for your super to invest in things like protecting the environment, making clever decisions with your money and putting your hard earned dosh to good use, check out our new online course we created with the legends at Aware Super to find the right super for you in less than 10 minutes.  It’s custom-built for young’uns like you and I to get the lowdown on finding the right super for you.
