If you are looking for a fun gap-year option, or want to kickstart a career as an Outdoor Instructor, Avondale's courses in Outdoor Leadership may be just what you're looking for.

Avondale’s Certificates III and IV in Outdoor Leadership, Diploma of Outdoor Leadership, and Short Courses provide professional training in an exciting array of challenging adventure activities. The courses also offer nationally recognised competency-based training qualifications, designed to equip you for employment in outdoor leadership , tourism and education sectors. The Certificate III and IV is also a great gap-year option.

The Outdoor Leadership courses are highly practical with much of the instruction taking place in the field, giving students the opportunity to travel around Australia. In the past, trips have involved: bushwalking in the Barrington Tops and the Snowy Mountains, sea kayaking around the Central Coast and Queensland, white-water paddling in Victoria and abseiling and climbing in the Blue Mountains.

Avondale has been providing professional training for outdoor guides and instructors since 2000 to both domestic and international students. We offer a unique combination of theoretical and practical resources that is highly respected within the national industry.

The Outdoor Leadership courses are also a pathway to further study in related higher education programs, such as the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching.

Certificate III and IV in Outdoor Leadership

The Certificate III and Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership can be completed in one year (three sessions) of study. The Certificate III is completed in Sessions 1 and 2 and the Certificate IV in Session 3.

Diploma of Outdoor Leadership

There are two pathways into the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership.

The first is via completion of the Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership.

The second pathway allows you to submit evidence of previously completed outdoor leadership and/or recreation units and submission of logged outdoor leadership experience. If the evidence provided does not fully meet the entry criteria, you may gain entry into the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership by completing a bridging course.

If you are unable to complete all components of the bridging course, we may advise you to withdraw from the bridging course and enrol in the Certificate III/IV in Outdoor Leadership.

Note: depending on your experience, you may be granted advanced standing (i.e. recognition of prior learning).
