Fiji

What is the Helping Teach in Fiji program?

On the gorgeous Coral Coast of Fiji you’ll join a team of other young travellers and volunteers from around the world, helping to make a difference.

Fiji is a country in much need of external help, especially with its younger population. An under-supply of teaching staff means large class sizes in its public education. In this program, you have the choice of working with younger kids at a village kindergarten or schoolchildren in a primary school. Whichever you choose, you will be a great help to the teacher and an exciting new presence for the kids.

At our kindergarten project, the kids are aged between 4 and 7 and demand a lot of attention. The class sizes are large so it is difficult for local staff to give each child as much attention as they need.  You will help take care of the kids during classes as well as creating some sessions and activities of your own with crafts, songs, and games. If you choose to help at a Primary School you will provide a great service both to the kids and the teachers – you’ll assist the class teacher who does his or her best to serve the students spread across a variety of ages and educational levels.

Week 1 is full of activities, culture and sightseeing before getting stuck in to volunteering from Week 2 onwards.

What did previous participants think?

“I had a fantastic time in Fiji, it was an incredible, once in a lifetime experience and I will definitely be doing it again!”  Courtney from NSW

Where will I stay?

Your accommodation is a beach-front volunteer house, exclusively for our team. Volunteers share a bunk-style room with three to five others, and the shared bathroom has hot water and western-style toilets. Rooms are fan-cooled and there is wifi available as well as a fridge for your use. Delicious catered meals are included.

What will I do?

Your teaching schedule will vary, but generally, you should expect around 3 hours of classroom time each morning Monday to Friday.  There may also be the option to spend the afternoon session in school, and this may also be available to those doing the kinder program.  Alternatively, spend a couple of hours in the afternoon lesson planning as a group.

In kinder you’ll be getting creative with arts, crafts and songs.  In school, you’ll assist the teacher with maths, computers or English teaching or you may choose to focus on Physical Education, music, arts and crafts or any other area of expertise you may have.

Intro week is packed full of exciting adventures and cultural excursions where we explore Sigatoka and its beautiful surrounding areas and get acquainted with Fijian culture.  Various crafts give Fiji a unique identity that along with traditional etiquette and local architecture tells a story of a deep island culture.  During the week you’ll challenge your artistic and creative side through weaving and Fijian cooking classes and we experience the traditional Fijian welcome called “Kava Ceremony”. You’ll also take a Fijian language lesson.
