Help protect and preserve endangered sea turtles. You'll be protecting natural nesting sites, assisting in the hatchery and incubation and releasing tiny baby turtles into the sea! Located on the charming island of Nusa Penida, a 45-minute speedboat ride from mainland Bali, this project is in its early stages. You will work alongside a local team and help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia.
Your Bali experience starts with 5 days of exciting adventures and activities where we explore Ubud and its beautiful surrounding areas, before heading to the turtles from week 2 onwards. The culture and tradition of Ubud complements perfectly your beach time and role as a wildlife warrior.
“Everything was really great. ” Wilma from QLD
For week 1, volunteers will be accommodated in our volunteer house in a village on the outskirts of Ubud. Here you’ll experience the real Bali and mingle with the locals. In Nusa Penida, the accommodation is similar in that volunteers share a bunk-style room with four to eight others, and the shared bathroom has hot water and western-style toilets. Delicious catered meals are included.
The typical activities you’ll be involved with include feeding the turtles, cleaning the tanks, collecting seaweed and catching live food for the turtles and also cleaning the beach to ensure a positive environment. Often the team will need to weigh and measure the turtles to record their growth, and also provide treatment for sick and injured turtles if present. Depending on the timing, you may be involved in the release of injured turtles after treatment, site maintenance and construction work such as the creation of new tanks, painting the walls, etc. Other ongoing project work includes the creation of educational materials and school visits to give lessons for local students.
During your stay here, we’ll take a break from working one day for a trip to Crystal Bay, a beautiful beach and a great spot for snorkelling. In the evenings there will be opportunities for volleyball or beach soccer or to watch documentaries about turtles which will help you to widen your knowledge about these amazing creatures. Thursday nights we have a bonfire and dinner at the beach.
Intro week is packed full of exciting adventures and cultural excursions where we explore Ubud and its beautiful surrounding areas, getting acquainted with Balinese culture. It includes Balinese language lessons, visits to temples, a walking tour of Ubud and its famous Monkey Street.
You’ll challenge your artistic and creative side through local Batik art and Balinese cooking classes, experience a traditional dance show and make a traditional flower offering at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. At this temple you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Holy Water and pray for good luck.
