
15 Trades That Need Apprentices Right Now
The road to employment is changing shape before our eyes, and while it’s a bit unpredictable, things look good for apprentices and tradies. Currently, it’s harder than ever for university graduates to find jobs, but there’s shiploads of work out there for apprentices and tradies.
The government has a thing called the National Skills Needs List, which is a guideline for the jobs that we really need more people to do. There are a tonne of trades industry jobs on there and here are 15 you might want to consider:
1. Arborist
This job is all about maintenance and cultivation of trees, shrubs and vines and can involve climbing, operating a chainsaw and running a wood chipper.
2. Plumber
This job is concerned with water supply, and involves fitting and fixing pipes, heating and sanitation.
3. Baker
This one’s about making bread, cakes, pastries and other delicious gluten based foods.
4. Bricklayer
These are the people who build walls, houses and other things that are made out of bricks.
5. Boat builder and repairer
This could involve anything from fibreglassing, engine maintenance or painting to boat design.
6. Carpenter
Originally concerned just with wood, carpenters now work with all kinds of materials, building housing, installation, scaffolds and furniture, amongst other things.
7. Electrician
These are the geniuses who provide us with heat and light, wiring the electrics in homes, businesses and public infrastructure projects.
8. Gasfitter
The ones who install, maintain and repair gas lines in homes and businesses.
9. Hairdresser
The ones who make the rest of us look good.
10. Fitter and turner
These people make mechanical parts (turner) and put them together (fitter) to build machines.
11. Landscape gardener
The art of rearranging gardens, estates and grounds.
12. Motor mechanic
The ones who build and fix engines for a living.
13. Butcher
The ones who cut up animals and make them into food.
14. Cabinet maker
They don’t just make cabinets, but all kinds of fine furniture and woodwork.
15. Painter
The ones who make houses look good.
